My Farmall 656 diesel pump leaks right where one of those 6 pipes connects, on the output side, to the cylinders. I"m a complete novice with diesels - but there must be some kind of o-ring at the connection? It"s fully tightened but still drips when engine is running. Have a full tank of fuel - how do I fix it, replace filters, and bleed it? Is bleeding it a 1-man job? Never done it. (My only "help" is a mechanically-challenged wife and 3 worthless kids.)

656 simple simple simple tractor. the line is bad cracked the 656 didn't have and seal rings on them the used a swedge type seal basicly the high pressure line had a lil machined end on it that is tightened against the fitting on the pump. take it off take it to a CaseIH dealler tell them model tractor year and which cylindar it is. Bleeding is simple you should have on the supply line from the tank a lil hand primer pump and on top of the filters lil bleed screws start with the first filter open bleed screw pump til solid fuel (no air bubbles) close screw open second bleed screw pump til solid fuel close loosen supply line to pump pump til solid fuel. never pre fill filters always bleed with hand primper because you run a great risk of introducing foreign material i.e. dirt into the fuel pump and fuel pumps hate dirt and air bubbles so if you take care of the fuel system youll have a long and trouble free life.

Hi Hay4horse, I assume you are referring to one of the individual high pressure injector lines.
If it is fully tightened then there is a possibility of a very small crack in the line. There are usually no O-rings. BE VERY CAREFULL THESE LINES ARE UNDER ABOUT 3000 PSI pressure when the engine is running. If it is a small crack you have two options, one get it brazed by an experienced welder or replace it with a new one. The replacement has to be identical, you just cannot make a replacement from a piece of steel tubing. When engine is stopped you can replace the leaky line with new one and not have to bleed fuel system.

Hi Hay4horse, I was probably wrong since you probably have a D282 Diesel engine in the 656 and it will have banjo fittings at the injection pump with brass or fiber washers on both sifes of the banjo. So probably a bad or missing washer.

You need to get a couple new seals. Sometimes you will find that they are copper washers but usually a black steel ones. Once they start to leak, the fuel will etch a groove in them and tightening them will not stop the leak. Be sure to completely clean the side of the engine before opening up any portion of the fuel system.

Sorry I cannot help you with your leak problem. However in my experience there is no such thing as a worthless kid. Mechanically challenged wives, most definitely, but it is amazing how much help they can be with a bit of sugar on the request for help.
