Hey Guys,
Another in my long list of dumb questions. Are the only Head Studs that get washers the ones that the throttle stand goes on, or do they all have washers? And it seems like I"ve read I should put some locktite on the bottom of studs when I install them?

I broke a couple off and just called IH, they want $12 dollars each for them! Going to Fastenal now to see if they have some.

Appreciate your input.

Brian

Do a close inspection of the stud holes in the head. You will find that two of them are actually tubes pressed through the head. The two washers go on the studs for those two holes. Those two studs, along with the ones throught the throttle bracket, need to be longer than the other studs.

No one indicated the type. Heavy flat washers are correct. Lock washers should be used for ballast. I have repaired more equipment with cracked missing lock washers than when it was bolted up without them. Several studies on viabratory holding power indicate that lock washers are failure points. Locktite, cotter pins on castle nuts, safety wire and jambnuts yes, lock washers go in the recycle bin. JimN

Are the washers that you speak of real thick flat washers? I found two in the box of head hardware!?

Yes, and I have them, just wanted to make sure which studs they went on. I assumed the ones that hold the throttle/gov rod plate, but have been told they go on the outside 2 studs of the 3 studs in the middle of the head.

As soon as my gasket comes in, I will be putting the head on my rebuild. And now here is the conversation about 2 washers? Flat or lock? I don't remember washers when I took it off!

There are three studs in the middle row and the middle one is offset to the left. The washers go on the two end studs in the middle row. Dave

Thanks Tom, appreciate that. I feel really bad because Ken Fox, who I met through here and has been a great help, gave me a handful last time I was out to his place. Can't find them now. So I feel doubly dumb.

I'll let you know if I can't find them in a day or two.

i use teflon pipe sealant compound on the bottom of the head studs, keeps the anti freeze form getting past the threads that go in the water jacket. if its an m, there are two different stud lenghts, i cant remember, but i THINK (not sure) they go in the front and rear of the block. i have a super m apart right now and i think....again not 100% sure the washers go on the middle studs under the valve cover.

Thanks Glen, I'll be sure to get some.

Mine is an H, but there are still two different size studs, at least that's what the IH man said this morning. When I took them off I thought threre were three sizes, the middle ones, the outers, and the two outers that the throttle mount/stand thing goes on seemed to be different lengths. My manual doesn't seem to tell me.

Thanks,

Brian

What are these studs on? I have a handful of H studs lying around here somewhere and you are welcome to some of them.

when putting the studs in the block USe two nuts scrw the nuts together and use a wrench on the top nut to tighten the stud i woudl not use lock on the bottom of the studs. When Placing the washers and nuts on the studs put a little oil on the washers to give them a little better bite when Torqueing the head down. IF more questions email me and i will Answer qny questions u have.
