Can this axel removal be done by removing PTO to get the axel out or do you need to take the top cover of the Transmission DIF

The axle can be removed without taking the top cover off. Remove the retainer from the inside end of the axle. (either bolt(s) or a snap ring) Remove four cap screws from outer axle bearing/ seal retainer. Slide axle out while wiggling the bull gear off the inside end. The inner bearing can be now be removed by moving the back of the bull gear toward the center of the tractor and removing the inside bearing rertainer.

This works on the H and M also but is a little more difficult because of the smaller PTO hole.

I will try this the next time I have to go in one. Those deck gaskets are kinda pricey.

The outer is easy. Just remove wheel and cap. When I installed new inner bearings in my M and my 400 I removed the top cover deck.
