Help! New brake bands seem awfully tight, but looks like this is the only way they go on. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have had bad experience with after market brake bands. The last set I bought several years ago for an H was about 3/8in to long. I had to shorten them and weld the back together. I now take all band brakes and disc brakes to a brake and clutch shop for relineing, you get better material and workmanship for less money. You know the ones IH sells are aftermarket also.

On the bottom of the brake pans(covers) there is a set screw with a jamn nut..looosen them off . The spring clevis' should be freed up and let off . You may have to heat them red hot and douse with cold water to get them to turn . Put some anti sieze on them so adjustments later can be easy. The new bands should not be real tight when you put them on. Then to adjust the brakes turn the set screw in as far as it will go, then back it off a quarter to a half turn and jamn lock it. Set your clevis' so the brakes have the same drag on each wheel. If need be you may have to loosen the jamn nut on the bottom of the pan and turn out another quarter. Do a search on H brakes on this forum, there have been several discussions that I have participated in and a lot of info came in from various contributors...Mike in Exeter Ontario

I found the same thing with new bands from IH. I just backed all the adjustments off as far as I could and reshaped the bands a little. Maybe others have more suggestions.
