I got around to messin with the Super MD I picked up. I took the advise from earlier question I posted, I pulled the side cover and oil filler on injection pump and looked around inside. Everything in there looked clean and free to move. I have a IT manual with a exploded view of the pump, it looks like I need to pull the bottom cover to look at governor? I left the fuel off and the engine seemed to idle down until it ran out of fuel in the bowl. Could there be something wrong with the scavanger pump, like that it not returning enough fuel to the tank and its get to much fuel pressure?

I really cant tell if the rack is moving. With the covers removed, and me working the throttle everything in could see was moving. I will work on it somemore tomorrow. I really couldnt see anywhere on pump to get to the rack or anything in side cover to pry on. There is a nut above and ahead of the throttle arm, is this the nut you say to turn forward and back slightly? The tractor has sat for 25 years, had new head and M&W pistons installed just before they parked it in the shed. When I got the tractor I drained all the fluids. Fuels, oils, etc. The pump was full of deisel. The oil I put in it still looks and smells free of fuel. Thanks.

When I was in the first efforts to get my MD to run on Diesel, the pump was stuck with the plunger up (not pumping) your plunger operates, but is not being rotated by the rack. Either the rack is stuck, or the govrenor is stuck. Mine was varnished (old oil residue and evaporated diesel) tight. I found no problems taking the entire device apart (with a diagram and clean cloth on a workbench). Nothing was forced, and using naptha as a solvent, it sclened up and ran just fine. JimN

Steve; I didn't find the previous post you mentioned so I don't know what you tried or what advice you received, however, I have worked with the IH Type A injection pump a bit and have yet to find the govenor causing problem you describe. It may very well be, I just haven't come accross that yet.

If the pump ignores the throttle then your problem is most likley a stuck plunger rack, or the small ball bearing on the engine side of the pump that supports that end of the cross shaft could be siezed. Either possibility is usually caused by moisture due to condensation.

In either case the pump should be removed from the engine to facilitate proper repair. I have seen a time or two where the rack can be freed by taking the side cover off and gently (very gently) working the linkage with a wrench. A worst case senario is; the front pump mount and a plug on the rear must be removed to access the rack so it can be moved woth a bit more force.

The good news is, if the engine runs the plunger isn't stuck.

I went back to find your earlier post but must not have gone far enough. So if this is a repeat, my apologies and I hope I didn't cross swords with anyone.

Naw, I doubt it'd be the scavenger pump. There's mechanisms in the main pump that should control the total amount of fuel getting to the injectors regardless of input from the scavenger. Better pull some more covers and check the governor etc in the main pump. You're sure the rack moves freely, right?
