I talked to this guy who has both a 400 and a 560. He claims that since he overhauled his 400 with oversized sleeves, it will outpull his stock 560. He also says some of his other friends claim the same thing. Can this be true? Says he would sell his 560 before the 400. Is he telling the truth? Says the 560 doesn't smoke and runs good. What do you think?

All a 560 is is a gas guzzling, loud, non user friendly tractor.
My 400 is a much better tractor.

My 560 hasn't used a drop of gasoline in 3 years. It burns a little diesel, but not much.

I have a 400 gas, 450 gas, 450 diesel and 560 diesel. What everyone else is saying is pretty much correct. The 400/450 gas in most situations feel just as strong as the 560. When the 560 really shows its muscle is when you pull its ears back. The 560 makes it rated hp at 1800 rpm, but is easily runs out over that RPM making more hp all the way. Stock 400/450's tend to start running out of wind much over 1600 rpm due to that long stroke. Really they feel very similar up to the rated rpm's, but the 560 will pull a lot harder if you turn up the rpm's.

I don't really know anything about the 560 gas as far as practical experience.

John: You don't say whether your talking gas or diesel. If diesel, I know you can crank 90 hp out 560 and do it for 10,000 hours. You may well crank 90 hp out of a 400 diesel, but I don't think it will do it for 10,000 hours. Why do you think 560 was the tractor that gave rear end trouble, exactly, more engine. You have to compared more than two tractors, to declare statments as your friend has.

When these tractors were new it took some time to pay for one, based on it's hp output, by the same sign one expected the tractor to last a long time.

Most people don't realize right away that the engines in the 400 and 450 actually have more displacement than the 560's gas engine. 400's engine was a 264, 450's was a 281, while 560's was only a 263. 400 with a oversized sleeve kit would also be a 281. 560's engine was rated at a higher speed than the older tractors, and since horsepower is a measure of how much work can be done in a certain amount of time, the tractor with the faster running engine is going to come out looking better. The 400/450's long stroke engine will give it the edge as far as torque goes. So yes, I would believe that a 400 could walk all over a stock 560 gas. Keep in mind that those old 263's can be made to run too. Built to 706 specs, it would give the 400 a run for it's money. Also remember that there's more to it than just the engine. If the 400 has more ballast and better tires, that'll make more of a difference than anything.

I don't have a 560 but my old 400 don't like much pulling with my 666. If it was as heavy it might.

I have both a 460 diesel and a 400...The 460 has a big pump and injectors but the old 400 has an MW pistons and governor and will outpull the 460 every time without even trying.

I used to have a 400D and a 460D, I still have the 460. The 400 would out pull the 460, but on the PTO the 460 would whip the 400.

I've heard similar comments about the long stroke 4's vs the newer 6's. Longer stroke gives more torque and the feel of more power/lugging ability.

I've heard the same thing from a couple of differant people. I think the 400's engine having a longer stroke is what they are feeling as "more power". They are a very torquey engine.
