About 2 months ago, I seen in a famrers lot towards the back, a big articulating (turns by hydraulics in the center, cant think of the proper term), lime green tractor with duals on all corners. I was like WTH is that thing?!?!
Didnt think much of it until about a week ago when I went to the dealer to get my hydraulic filter. I noticed in the back of the used lot a lime green tractor. Not quite as big as the other one I saw, singles on all corner, but it was still rather large. As we drove by only thing I could see was a emblem on the side that said Steiger (or maybe it was Stieger). I'm like who the heck is that?!? So we drove a bit more though the lot and in the front where the new caseIH tractors are, I seen on the front of a New Red CaseIH tractor an emblem that said Steiger? Is steiger a engine design or what?

Who makes these lime green tractors I see every now and then?

Finally something I can contribute a little to. The Steiger tractors were built about 7 miles from where I live (I am near Thief River Falls, MN). Some of the earlier models I have heard about are the puma, panther, couger and models like 270 and 310. The farmer I work for has a 310, I think it is an early 1980's model, and it is still used extensively every spring and fall. I believe it has over 8,000 hours on it and going great. They were built by a couple talented farmers turned manufacturers. I believe after they were sold locally, they were built in Fargo, ND by Case/IH. That is the end of my smarts.

About 15 yrs ago I drove a Stieger while helping a large-acreage farmer get his corn ground ready for planting. The farmer said that tractor generated 300 hp...I believed it because it would toy with a 42 ft. field cultivator. The transmission had 3 shift levers with a color coded shifting chart on the dash and, as I recall, that gave it about 20 different gear ranges. It was fun to drive something that powerful.

Steiger designed and built(?) the first sucessful IH articulating 4 wheel drives like the 4366, 4568, and 4768. Steiger has been around almost 50 years.

You'll see a lot of them used out here in IA fairly inexpensive. I think Steiger is owned by AGCO now, but not positive.

Stieger is another brand that has fell to the buyout/merger theme. I think the word you were looking for is articulated. Stieger tractors have been around for years. I use to see some of them in the 70s and early 80s when we we would go to Kansas and Nebraska on pheasant hunting trips. Not many in this part of KY.
