All:

Update to my '52 H project: I've got 'er split and have accumulated all of the parts to replace the ring gear and clutch (Clutch plate, Pressure plate, TO bearing and Pilot bearing). I was getting ready to put the new ring gear on my flywheel and happened to notice a lot of fairly deep cracks on the "clutch" surface of the flywheel. I'm wondering if this indicates replacement is necessary or if I can get away with it as it is? I'd rather not spend the cash, but don't want to cause a safety issue or have to split it again any time soon. Any thoughts?

Since you have it split, you might want to have it reground. That will not eliminate the cracks, but will make it smoother. Cracks are common; unless they are severe, whatever that means, I doubt if they are a safety issue.
