Whining final drive??????

My left (sitting on tractor) final drive on my Farmall 100 started whining yesterday while I was out in the pasture.
I dropped the pan and was rewarded with the smell of decomposing oily sludge and a gush of water. Now I dang well know I didn't have this when I last checked the oil in the drives,,,,or at least it didn't smell like this thats for sure.
I started poking around and discovered that at least one threaded attachment hole on the inside of each final drive has been overtorqued and the casting which backed it up had been broken through. This made a direct entry for the water to enter my drives.

I tried my best to clean all of the goo and dirt (there is hard sandy stuff) out of the drives but there is still lots of mess up in there so I reassembled everythig and filled each drive with diesel and ran it around a bit. I am thinking of leaving it in there and just periodically rolling it up and down the drive to get the deisel worked in and the sludge broken down.

Do you guys think I should use a heavy 80-140W oil when I go back and refil it or should I stick with HYTRAN and maybe some Lucas additive?????

Just like it's name suggests HyTran (Hydraulic and Transmission) is for combined hydraulic and transmission systems that are designed for the lower viscosity oil. It is also for use in any transmission that has a TA (Torque Amplifier).

Any of the letter series tractors will be much better off with 90 weight or, as I prefer to use, 85w-140.

And gear whine is normal in anything that has straight cut (spur) gears.

Patrick: Final drives and transmission on offsets should always be gear oil as heavy as you can find.

Patrick, I would not put Hytran in the final drive to start with. These old tractors just had spur gears in the final drive and 90W or heavier oil works best. I have a Cub, B, and A that all have the similar final drive and even with 90W oil they whine in road gear, especially. Roger

Thank you very much for the reply! So you are saying that a little whine is OK? I'm really hoping that my bearings arent burned up.

How bout a mix of 80-140W and maybe a pint of Lucas? Will the Lucas help quiet the gears?

Thanks Hugh :) I dug and dug for oil specs for the drives but coudn't find anything else reccomended but HYTRAN. Even the Case/IH dealer gave me some mess when I said I was using 80-140W.

I'll be going back with the heavy stuff now for sure bud! :)
