Removing steering gear on a M

I would like to remove the steering gear on my farmall M to seperate the steering shaft from the front bolster for a painting. I have removed the castle nut but can not remove the gear. My repair manual says to use a puller which is obvious except for the fact that there is no roonm to get the jaws of the puller on the back side of the gear. Anyone had luck removing a stubborn steering gear. I have already broke the castle nut trying other options so I think will ask before I go further.

Thanks for all your replies.

If you are trying to get the horozontal steering shaft out, you remove the large nut in front of it (a pipe plug) and screw the shaft out the front without removing the sector gear.

I had the same problem on a Super H. I fashioned a puller by using a normal gear puller and some chains. Put so much pressure on it I was afraid I would break something. As to painting, I painted the upper and lower bolster separately while off the tractor. As stated below, there is really no reason to pull the gear off unless you need to replace something. Those things do not always come off easily no matter what you do.

I tried most everything iincluding a puller made especially for that purpose and jacking front end up and using a splitting wedge etc. Finally had to use heat on the gear, a new nut and lots of sledge. Never again. Why do you want to remove it for painting, I painted mimne after it was all back together. The only reason to take the gear off is to chage the gear or replace the busings in the bolster . I changed to busings and rotateed the gear 180 and fixed my steering problems.

That gear is on a tapered spline - sometimes they can be a real SOB to get off!

I've found beating the pivot shaft down thru the gear with a large hammer is the quickest/easiest. A few tips:

1 - Remove the lower bolster/wheel assembly. (The mass of the assembly otherwise absorbs and reduces the "power" of hammer blows to the pivot shaft)

2 - Remove the castle nut, turn it over and thread it back on until the top of the pivot shaft is flush with the top of the nut (protects the male threads).

3 - Before hitting, lay a scrap of soft metal plate (aluminum, copper) on top to further protect the threads

4 - Use a LARGE hammer or maul. A few good licks from a 8 pounder should knock the shaft free.

I usually jack the front of the tractor up off the ground just a little bit and smack the shaft a good one with a brass hammer or leave the nut on toward the top so you do not mess up the threads and give it a good whak or two. Never had one that would not give up this way. Hope this helps.

460anger,

An excellent idea and I was doing just that when the castle nut broke. I am trying to find another nut of the same thread to try again but have not had any luck yet.

Thanks

460anger - Thanks for this response. It helps me also. I assume an H would be the same. Are you saying that the only thing holding the shaft in is the top nut and gear? Thanks

Yeap, H is the same. The only thing that holds shaft in is the gear and castle nut, and the weight of the tractor. The shaft coming through the gear is tapered, so usually it doesn't take much to break it loose. Just do like I said and you should have no problem. Can't talk to you any more tonight, I'm going to bed! Good Luck!
