Clearance problems with hood and regulator

I have a Farmall H with the regulator on top of the generator. The problem is that the hood will not shut and latch because the hood hits the top of the regulator. The regulator is off slighly to the right hand side and not directly on top of the generator. I feel that I have the correct mounting bracket for the generator because it barely clears the valve cover. What can I do to fix this problem?
Thanks!

You would be better off by drilling and tapping the outer housing and re-mounting the regulator but be careful not to drill into the field coils and use short screws. Some regulators or cutouts have mount brackets that are sort of offset like the ones on the A's that shift them a bit.

When the regulater went bad on my H ,I had a 6v Mopar regulator. I made a bracket on the 2 valve cover studs& installed it there.I had to make up the 2 wires from gen to reg but it all worked fine. It is still on there. I don't think I would have ever used the Mopar reg anywhere else. It saved me the cost of a reg from IH.

Thanks for all the relies. I think that I will redrill the holes.

Croz, I think the old generator cut outs that were on the generator were not as tall as a voltage regulator. I think when they went to voltage regulators they relocated them off the generator because of the clearance issue. Roger

Croz: I don't think the regulator should be on top of the generator. Most of those row crops had the regulator behind the engine under the fuel tank. At least that is where it was on the ones I had.

My regulator is made to be on top of the generator. Do not know what year they changed that, but the first ones were on top of the generator. I am wondering if I should take the dowel pins out and turn the generator so that the mounting holes for the regulator are on top instead of off to one side.

Thanks

Croz - Be careful if you rotate the field coil frame relative to the rear end plate! The brushes (attached to the rear plate) must be maintained in a certain position relative to the field coil shoes. If they are moved generator output will be impaired.

May be easier to modify the stamped steel regulator "saddle" bracket, or drill/tap fresh holes in the generator frame to locate the regulator where you want it.

Or do like IHC did with later production tractors and relocate the regulator under the gas tank or on the front side of the ammeter box.

I'd just give it a turn if that would solve your problem. I have a '49 W6 and the cutout is on top of the genny, hood fits fine.
