I'm trying to find out for sure what size rear tires my H should have. right now i have what appears to be old steel wheels that someone welded onto rims to have rubber tires. also, i was told the other day that by looking at the numbers on the front axle you can tell what year the tractor is. has anyone heard of that before?
thanks
Gary
p.s. if anyone has some good rims and tires i'm looking for some.

You probaly have a WW II tractor as that is when many came on steel supposedly to save rubber but I knew of several that were bought on steel and owner got allotment for tires and rims and changed them out right away resulting in wasting scarce steel. As far as dating tractor if you do not know serial number there are casting codes on most major casting that will tell date that casting was made go to archives and do a keyword search for "casting codes" under Farmall heading and you will find lots of information. If you know serial number you can go to serial numbers on left of screen and determine year tractor was made.

Original rear tire size would have been 10X38. That size was replaced by the 11.2X38, and then later became a 12.4X38. The original rims would have been 10 inches wide. Some Hs were equipped with the larger 13.6X38, same as the M, but this requires a wider rim. A few of the early Hs and Ms also came on 36 inch diameter rims, rather than 38. The rear wheels that you have are called "cutdowns", and are precisely just that, someone cut the steel wheels off the spokes, and then welded the rubber tire rims to the spokes. I have an H uquipped as such, and I have seen several others. It was a cheap way to put rubber tires on a steel wheeled tractor.

The serial # will be on a plate on the left side of the tractor. On the left side of this forum, under research and info is a place to look up the year of your tractor using the serial #.

Rusty Farmall gave you the scoop on the tires. I have a set like that for my F-14.
