I'm probably going to be looking at an H on Saturday. I was looking over my checklist of things to look at built from the suggestions of a previous thread, and one of the things on the list was "Check for all controls and linkages"...

What does that mean? Light control, steering wheel, throttle, PTO pull rod... other than that... what else should I be checking for in respects to "Controls and linkages"?

Mike, just a suggestion here- since you seem pretty dead-set on acquiring an H at some point in the future, might just be a good idea right now to go ahead and spring for all the manuals- owners, parts, and repair. Most or all are available right here on YT. Since you"re gonna get an(another) H eventually, you"ll need the manuals once ya go to working on it, and, at this point, they"ll be really helpful when you"re looking at one and want to know what"s there and what"s not.

As a side note, don"t turn down a good tractor just because stuff that"s shown in the manual is different or doesn"t exist on the particular one you"re looking at. Not all came with every option, and most have been modified to some extent over the years, but could easily be returned to stock if that"s what ya want.

Good luck!

I have been telling him for quite some time to get a manual and service data but its more fun to get here online and ask questions. Mike just get knowlegable about FARMALL H before you buy another pink elephant. You are in the service of this country and we thank you but you dont know anything about buying a good tractor.

The tractor doesn't turn over, so I have to check what I can without the engine.

Mike,
Read through the articles on buying a tractor on this site before buying another one. If you're acceptable to a friendly suggestion, take a close look at your financial and mechanical capabilities before getting into a similar situation. With the cost of a total restoration, at your age I just couldn't afford it and I wouldn't have touched one with a stick just to have something to drive in a parade. The list of family members that would have kicked my butt is long and distinguished. If you're really headstrong about getting one though, seriously, buy the manuals now.

"A word of caution. If the tractor is not running the day you preview, you cannot evaluate it. The seller may say, in all honesty, that everything checked out fine the day it was parked, but when a tractor sits, serious problems can develop. In such cases, you must start your bidding from nearly scrap level prices since you have no idea what you're getting into. If you buy many tractors, you will find that this scenario is common."

On an H, you can find them all pretty easy. They're all visible, and if they don't work the tractor don't go.

I would grab the steering wheel and work it back and forth. See how much "play" there is. Does the steering wheel mover 6 or 8" before the wheels start to move. Look at where the steering shaft goes through the support where the gagues are. is there a lot of wear in this bushing?

get down on your knees facing the front wheels, give them a good shake, are they tight? Sometimes if front wheel bearing are real worn you can even hear a Klunk, Klunk sound when you shake it hard.

Next look at the brake and clutch pedals. How worn are they on the face, where the ole farmers foot wore down the little cross hatches. Wiggle the pedals left and right. A tracter with a lot of use/wear will have really floppy pedals.

Take the gear shifter and work it through the shifting pattern. you can hear the shifting forks and gears working back and forth. Does it bind up anywhere? Does it feel smooth and go into all the gears? Shove in the clutch and do it some more.

You said you will have to do it without the engine, its not stuck is it? If it's not stuck turn it over a few times. You can take the spark plugs out one at a time and have someone turn it over and check the compression by putting your thumb over the spark plug hole. (make sure switch is off and it's out of gear)

Also maybe rock it back and forth with the rear wheel to make sure nothing is bound up there.

These are just some things that come to mind and not a full guarantee it is good, just some odds and ends to look at.

Gene
