Hey guys! :)

does anyone know what the operating temp range for the C-123 engine is? Automotive guages usually start at 100 and up to 250 and while I do have one installed it does take a little while to get my little 100 up to just a little above the 100 degree mark.

Now if you're asking why I'm not using IH guages then the reason is they remind me of dummy lights and I'd prefer something a little different. I've already got two tachometers (one engine, one PTO), oil pressure, voltmeter, and temp gauge for the hydraulics.

Without shutters on a "thermosiphon" system with no heavy load the only reasons for them to run above 100-120 degrees are bad news, ie leaky or wrong head gasket, clogged radiator etc. Usually they will not even move the replacement gauges off the bottom peg without a load. Also on these early systems the gauge monitors the coolant coming back to the engine at the bottom and they read much colder than the coolant going to the radiator at the top. Check the coolant level fairly often to make sure it is full or the siphon system will not circulate. Under low coolant level conditions the engine will overheat but the gauge will not show it because there is no circulation. Later systems with the water pump also have a thermostat and the gauge monitors at the top and they work and read like most cars.

Roger: Why all the lecture about thermosyphon, Patrick's tractor is Farmall 100 with C-123 engine, and will most definitely have a water pump.

In addition to this, your contention that a thermosyphon, not under load, running above 100-120 degrees is bad news. In that case my Super A has been transmitting bad news to me for well over 35 years. According to what I learned from the previous owner it would be closer to 54 years. Could kindly tell me when I should expect it to blow up?

Whew! I was wondering the same thing too Hugh! given the size of the C-123 engine, I figure it's normal operating temp would be in the 100-120 range anyway.

what I was looking for is the factory normal operating temp range so that way I can look to buy a guage that will register at least some sweep preferably with the normal temp somewhere in the midrange.

Does anyone know what IH figured as the normal operating temp?????

That is normal on a farmall in good order. Most of mine hardly register at all untill you pull them hard enough to heat them up.
