Ok, at the risk of sounding dumb again. I've pulled this hydralic filter off and cleaned it about 6 times now and done three complete flushes. Im still getting a red oxide colored rubbery substance on the screens. In about 10 min of cycling the loader it plugs up the system. They didn't paint the inside of the gear case with a red oxide primer or anything did they? It's not metallic, It's more like paint flakes, or some kind of rubber???? I wondered about old hoses on the loader, but every one I have ever seen was black all the way through??? Any insights or ideas would be appreciated.

Gary: I've been watching, it sounds to me as though filter has always been intact, thus nothing would have gotten through to pump, relief valve, control valves or loader. Then it's safe to assume the back flush from loader function is stiring all this crap up within transmission case.

Having said that why not jack tractor front end about 10", remove pto or back cover, remove every cover that gives access to transmission or torque tube, rent a steam jenny and go at her. Personally I'd use steam. I'm not sure what you can remove from a Utility, however a Farmall the top can be opened most of way from back to front. Even if you had to take it somewhere for steam, run it on your trailer then remove all covers. This way when you get to steam supply just park truck and trailer on upgrade.

Just my thoughts. I'd then let it drip dry for 24 hours, and put her back together, and fill with clean oil.

Yep, I think you are right, I am to that point now. I will research what I have to get apart to do that. Im not sure where I would have to go to access a steam cleaner, out here in the boondocks, but something extreme has to be done. It's never simple.

Actually, every IH casting I have seen has had a red oxide primer all over the inside of it. It should not be rubbery though. When I've seen it come off, it is in chips. Is it the same color as the inside of the filter housing of our 806, which is located in the post on page 5 (another dumb question on hydraulic oil) about the water in the hydraulic oil? If so, then that is probably where it is coming from. The one time I saw the stuff come off and in the filter was on our Farmall 806 that got water in the hydraulic oil. I had never seen it before and haven't seen it since, so I assume the water must have something to do with it. I would say to stop draining the hytran, as that has to be getting expensive, and stick to just replacing the filter. Have the filters been getting any cleaner? I cut off the paper covering on the filter and then look in between the pleats to see how much stuff is in there. I would just keep switching filters until finally they quit plugging, then drain the fluid and replace it a final time. I am sure someone else will have some better ideas.

I think both of you guys are onto something, It's got to be the red oxide primer. On the screen its little flakes but if you roll it up between your fingers its sorta rubbery feeling like paint that has lifted. No doubt this is why he parked the thing in the first place. It had been parked a long time and lots of water in it. The last three times i pulled the filter, I didn't drain the fluid. I just cleaned the filter and bypass screen. Its not getting any cleaner but its taking longer to plug up. Thanks

Well drilling companies and others (google wire mesh) will have it in bulk. (I do not know the physical layout of a 560) I would find a way to put a mesh screen around the intake with as much surface area as possible. Support of the inside of the screen is important (a spring or wire cage to prevent collapse would be good) brass screen solders well, and can make good intake filters.
Another thought is to run a small (mimi pump (little giant) with tubes going to a cone shaped milk filter in a bucket. Draw all the fluid out through the filter into the bucket, then pour it back in, run the tractor a bit, then do it again. In three or four runs the junk may be all out. The only worst case is the material may continue to flake/degrade off the surfaces. Good luck, JimN

I think that you are seeing exactly that red coating that has been applied to keep oil in a cast Iron case. It does not fail often, but when it does, (for what ever reason, including combinations of additives in the fluid) it is a mess. Were it Mine, I would install a large inline filter housing in the suction line and construct a 120 mesh screen to go in it instead of a filter. Then cleaning it would be moderately easy, and it would have 20 times the screen area of the original. Good Luck. JimN

See post above. Talk to me about a 120 mess screen? How do I go about doing that? Can you get these inline filter housing at Tractor farm stores? I don;t know about a suction line as the filter is on the right side of the casting and the fluid travels directly from the filter to the pump via a large hole across the casting.?

OK Im just thinking out loud....They make a washer for water hoses that has a cone shape wire mesh. I wonder if you could use something like that at one of the connections or at several of the connections. You could pin point where that suff was comming from too if you used a few of them.

Thanks for the idea, After cleaning the filter two more times. (Must be 8 or 10 times now) Im about ready to load it on the trailer, take the top off the tranny and open the bottom drains and take it to the quarter car wash LOL

Try a gallon or 2 of diesel to thin it out and clean everything you have in it. Not to long of course but that was the only way my tractor came clean..

Sounds like someone used silicon instead of a gasket somewhere in the system.
