I took out the middle wire on my dist. cap. coming out of the magneto. I then held it next to a ground, my spark was only about 1/16th inch long (or less). Is this all the bigger the spark is? or do I need to rebuild the magneto.? thanks

As Old said, if it dos not jump a minimum of 1/4" not matter what method you are using to start it, a crank or electric starter. All the impulse does on a mag is to retard the timing so you can start it with a crank

Bob I think JT was thinking distributor ignition not magneto.

That's absolute B.S.!

The impulse; besides retarding timing at cranking speed; makes for a MUCH HOTTER spark at cranking speed by causing a rapid change in the magnetic field in the mag's coil as the rotor "snaps" forward.

No impulse operation @ cranking speed equals slow change in the magnetic field in the mag's coil which equals weak spark at cranking speed.

Period.

Were you using the starter to crank it over? Sometimes the impulse coupler will dis-engage early. Try the had crank and listen for the impulse to snap-if you hear it AND the spark is still that weak try a new condenser and points, if that doesn't help the coil is probably arcing internally.

That spark shold jump a good 1/4 inch or better and be a brite blue color. If it isn't you have problems
