I am trying to clean and re-build an IH H4 magneto. I have ( I think)taken out all screws and the pieces that go on both ends, but I can't get the rotor to come out. I have the drive member off but can't get the plate that has the pawls behind it to move. I need to remove that plate and pawls to clean the rust so they will move freely and check the bearings. Also does the post the pawls snap on just press out? Looks like it would.
I have an I & T Magneto manual that covers testing and re-building this unit, but it does not tell me what I am not doing.
Any assistace would be appreciated. Thanks Tom/Idaho

Hi Tom you really should have a special puller tp pull that plate you can break it alfull easy with a reg puller if you can find one that will fit. Plus no those pegs that the pawls ride on are welded and pressed in and will usally break the hub before they come out. If they are worn bad you will need to find a donor hub thats good. Also make sure if you do get it apart you look at the springs for the pawls they go one way and I have had more people put them in wrong than you can imagine. Now the peg that the trip pawls hit on can be punched out turned and reinstalled just be carful beating on things. If you plan on replacing the bearings they are not cheap and the seats will need a special puller also. The front one has no way to get at it so you will have to really know what you are doing to get it out. Do not over grease the ball bearings or it can lead to problems also. If you need anything else just email me from my site or go to my site at farmallmagneto.com

Removing the impulse hub is covered in the REAL service manual.

You'll have to paste this into your browser as this site does NOT allow it to be posted as a link.
