Are the MTA and the 400 shifting forks the same? Thanks.

Shift forks are the same with same IH # on them, but the forks are welded to the shift rails. 400 and MTA transmissions are the same but on a 400 top cover the shifter opening is closer to rear of tractor so slots for the shift lever in the rails is a longer distance from the fork than a MTA rail. Also if I remember correct some of the half moon cut outs in the rails for spring loaded balls are in the wrong place.

I have lids from a '39 M, SMTA, 400, and 560. I have these because I wanted 560 ratios and bearings in a SMTA and I also wanted a 400 lid so I could run a early fast hitch on the same SMTA.

I made these alterations some years ago so I can't sit here at the computer and tell you exactly what I did. I think I used the SMTA forks/rails, rail retainers, and shifter with the 400 lid.

I probably have what you need.

Building on what D Slater said, I could do the machine work as I have a welder and a Bridgeport. However, I don't think that is necessary. I can look at the parts side by side and take some photos. I seem to recall that the front rail retainer needs to be notched about an eight of an inch. If using the 400 lid, you will also have to modify it for the steering column.

Wardner if I understood correct he's trying to put a M cover on a 400 rear. If you put a 400 cover on a MTA you should have been able to use the 400 shift forks with it because the transmission housing and everything in is just like a 400. If you have a set of MTA shift forks and rails left over thats what size he needs to put a 50 M cover on a 400 or SMTA rear end and make it work.

Have looked at using 400,450,560 shift fork and rails in MTA before but its not fresh in my memory. It could be managed by some good machine work. Seem to remember some slots and indents could just be recut but some would need filled and recut. Be hard to do without having some MTA forks to get the measurements from.

My recollectiion is they will interchange but one rail is slightly different; MTA 1st/reverse is slightly shorter. That can be corrected by altering the rail guide. D Slater will have more details. Stay tuned.
