How can I get my 706 Diesel unstuck?

I have a 1967 706 Diesel that is stuck after sitting outside for about 9 months. I have poured diesel fuel in the exhaust pipe and have been letting it set. My question: Is there any way that I can put it in gear and rock the tractor to help break it loose? Thanks for the help.

If the trator has a good TA it will only turn the engine backwards. The sprague clutch will release going forwards.

The local red shop guy here does that. He'll let 'em roll backwards down off the truck and then throw that lever forward somehow to "bump" 'em.

Never really did understand how he was doing it, but he can get that dead engine to spin a bit.

By the time the tractor comes to a stop, it's usually free.

If it is the 282 just remove the glow plugs to put atf in the cylinders. Leave them out if it turns to get the fluid out.

On a gas engine you can knock porcalin off plug, thread for greese zerk, fill greese gun with kerosene and pump till handle bends. could you do the same in injector hole?

Right side of the tractor behind the fuel filters, isn't there a little plate on the bell housing that you can take off and get a crowbar at that flywheel?

Also, you sure it wasn't 9 years instead of 9 months? Awful hard to stick a diesel; not sayin' it doesn't happen, but difficult.

After setting out that long i hate to be the one to tell ya this but i am the one that is going to tell ya that the head is going to have to come off and see just how bad it is as there has to be water in one or two of the holes and even if ya did get it to turn over water on the piston of a diesel is a bad thing . you stand a real good chance of doing some seirous damage here and for the cost of a head gskt. and valve cover gskt it ain't worthe the chance.

That must be why the 350 diesel I bought in December was not stuck after sitting outside for 12 years. It had a rain cap on the muffler, and I couldn't believe it was completely free turning. When I took the engine apart the cylinders were clean and shiny. I was amazed. Of course, it had all kinds of other problems. Roger

You are right, it was more than just sitting outside for 9 months. The previous owner did not have a rain cap on it and water got into the engine. I will give the the ATF in the injector holes a try and let you know. Thanks for the advice.

If you can pull the injectors I would then fill each cylinder with tranny fluid. Blow out the cylinders before filling them with tranny fluid. Let it sit a few days and with the injectors out hit the starter with fast shot hits, don't hold it long you just want to sort of hit and let off and hit again. Watch the crank pulley if it moves any at all keep hitting it. If that doesn't work top that off with turpentine not paint thinner by to realy turpentine and let that sit a few days and try the starter again

Not only that you can bend the connecting rods by pulling a stuck tractor this way, I have seen it done several times.

You can't pull-start a 706 anyway, at least not if it has a T/A. Without hydraulic pressure, it just freewheels.

I would use the ATF as Mack suggested. I wouldn't pull it since you can damage the gear train. Hal

Disels do not often stick like gasoline tractors unless you leave it out in the rain without a weather cap on the exhaust. Before you put too much stress on the engin and break a crank shaft, you might want to check for hydraulic lock. That occurs when the cylinder gets full of liquid. Putting oil or diesel in the exhaust will only oil one or two cylinders and is sure to cause hydraulic lock. You have to remove the injectors to turn it over or otherwise pull the head. Try the injectors first. If it will turn, spin it until all the liquid is out. If if will not turn, use a mixture of kerosene and transmision oil (the ratio is on you) and squirt it into the injector holes. Let it sit for a few days and try rocking the tractor in high gear. After putting the oil into the cylinders, you will have to spin the excess out with the starter before replacing the injectors. Have them pointed in a direction that does not matter since it will be messy.

Tractorvet said, quote: "...water on the piston of a diesel is a bad thing . you stand a real good chance of doing some seirous damage here and for the cost of a head gskt. and valve cover gskt it ain't worthe the chance."

I'm afraid I have to agree with him. I respect the opinions of others on this board and I don't think I know everything or have all the answers, but a Diesel is a different animal from a gasoline engine, and water in the wrong place can destroy connecting rods, cranks, bearings, etc.

In addition, we all know a gasoline tractor engine (or very old car engine) will often fire with very low compression (my Super C, with a split compression ring, was still firing at idle), but a Diesel depends on compression to fire the charge, and I don't think it likely a once-frozen ring/cylinder wall is going to do the trick.

So, even if you get it unstuck, it will likely miss on that cylinder until you rebuild.

Just my opinion.
