Ok, I must have made some progress thru adjusting the clutch, because when I put in any of the gears, then slowly let out on the clutch, it will creep a little bit. However, I have to fiddle with the clutch pedal to that point of contact between clutch plate and disc. This creates some smoke and 'burning smell' though. What else could need tweaking???

Something is backward here! You said that you could push the tractor with the clutch out AND in gear BUT when you push the clutch in it won't move??!! That is exactly backward from the way it is supposed to work. If that is what is happening then the pressure plate is probably binding the trans input shaft when you push the pedal in AND the clutch disk is not engaging with the pedal out. Something broke or was put in wrong. What ever it is-split it and check everything.

Last I saw something like that was 41 olds. I had to pull clutch plate(disc) and install the other way.

If the clutch is burning (smell) It is nor a good sign. Please answer the following:

1} With engine off. If the clutch is pushed in all the way, with the trans in 3rd gear, can the tractor be rolled along the ground with no unusual noise, or resistance?

2} With the trans in Neutral, can the clutch be let out without burning and smell?

3} With the trans in high gear, and the clutch out can the tractor be pushed forward without turning the engine, even if it is difficult to push?

How to adjust the clutch: With the engine off, put your hand on the clutch pedal. Push in on the pedal until a change is felt in how much effort it takes to push farther, (kindof gets harder than mild spring pressure) measure the distance that the pedal traveled from the drivers platform to the pedal where it was touching the platform. It should be one inch, or one and an eighth inches. If it is near this adjustment, the clutch is toast, splitting is necessary. If it is off, then adjust it so the pedal feels like I noted above. Then try it. If it still won't move the clutch is toast.

If you continue to get it hot enough to smoke, you will be buying a flywheel and a clutch pressure plate, and a disk. I guarantee it. If these do not help, Get a professional opinion on site. Best of Luck. Where in indiane are you? Some one here might be able to assist on site. JimN

Question 1 answer:Yes. With clutch pushed in, and trans in any gear, I can push tractor forward and back with no noises.
Question 2 answer:There is somewhat of a burning clutch smell when I let out clutch in neutral.
Question 3 answer:Yes.

I am in Central IL, and don't really have a knowledgeable repair shop nearby...I'm kinda in the 'sticks'.

I adjusted the clutch so that there is 1" pedal travel from drivers platform to the pedal. Now, with the engine off, clutch pused all the way in, and trans in 3rd gear, I cannot push the tractor at all. But when I let out on clutch, tractor can be easily pushed while in gear. Still a bad clutch or....??

Thanks for responding to my Questions. The clutch is toast. Sorry. That clutch requires splitting the tractor in two to change it. Manuals are a must. Splitting that tractor requires effort and care to prevent the front from tipping over, and the back from falling. Look in the archices to find more info. Clutches and pressureplates are found on this site, or NAPA, or a dealer. Change the throwout bearing and pilot bearing while it is down. Good luck, and a positive attitude will help. Asking area farmers, or a CaseIH dealer may be part of your answer. JimN

It sounds like that clutch may be slipping. I think you may need to split the tractor and take a look at that pressure plate and clutch disc. Hal

I've got a new clutch disc (not installed) and it looks in same condition as the one on tractor. Now, here's something interesting...If it's running in neutral, i can shift thru the gears without any grinding, without touching the clutch pedal. It doesn't move when I do this of course. Even tho the new disc looks the same as old one, should I still replace?? I also bought all the springs, bolts, and pressure plate as well.
