Magento Problems?

I have a 1940 H that was running fine until the other day when it started to sputter a little and would not throttle up very good. Shut it down and checked out the carb, drained a little gas out and generally just looked at things. I tried to restart it and it would not. Checked the spark and found it to be weak, could barely see it. Changed the condenser thinking it was bad, no difference. (Condenser is new)
Question(s) are What could be wrong, How to fix it and Is a Fairbanks Morse model X4B11 a correct magneto? Haven't had this tractor but a couple of months and always has started easy. Now won't even act like it wants to start. Just turns over.

Thanks for any help, new to this tractor and this forum.

Thanks Guys for all the help. Will check out the condenser and then the coil. Called and found a source for the coil.

(My wife has one of them magento colored dresses)

My 48C did the same thing. I found that the kill wire was shorted to ground.

Redmike - First thing I'd do is clean the breaker points. Draw a dollar bill thru them a few times, or dress them with a point file. Then hit them with a good, non-filming solvent (alcohol, acetone, etc) Finally check/reset the point gap to 0.013 - 0.015.

If that doesn't solve it, then suspect the coil is failing.

Incidentally "magento" sounds like some weird color women seem to like. And spark making thing on a tractor is spelled "magneto"(!)

I would try cleaning the points with some 320 wet or dry and see if that helps. I doubt that will help since I suspect the coil is weak. Borg Warner has new coils p/n FM200. You can convert your mag into a distributor by installing an automotive type coil and using the points & condenser in the mag. You would need to run a hot wire from an ignition switch to the coil. If your tractor is still 6 volts using + positive ground, then the wire from the small + terminal on the coil would go to the points in the mag. You would need to disconnect the grounding wire at the mag too. This can be done without removing the mag from the tractor. The same if you decide to replace the mag's coil. Hal
PS: Here's a picture of the IH H4 mag converted.
It has a ballast resistor since the tractor has been converted to 12 volts

The Fairbanks-Morse is not the correct mag. The correct mag is the IHC H4. But if the FM was working up to now, I wouldn't worry about swapping it out unless you are a perfectionist.

I am not a magneto expert, but I would guess that the coil needs replaced.

My 47 H did the same, I was sure pleased how good it would start, one day it wouldn't. I had spark at the plugs but not a pop. Put in new points & condenser, nothing. NO SPARK. Put the old condenser back in... started right up. New condenser was BAD right out of the box, NAPA dealer did get me a replacement at no charge.
