Nawlens: I hate to rain on your thunder, but you best put a brace from that back generator mount to back of alternator. Several months from now, your going to be telling us how the front casting of alternator broke.

I've been doing these for years and there is a principle one must adhere to. The alternator is designed to pivot on the wide base which you have on top. That has to go on bottom, with a lug at each end, to stand up to the presures of belt tension and vibration.

Hugh,

Ever since Gator been talking about mounting his alt I been thinking about something. On my Super A, on the left hand side of the old mounting bracket it has a one inch piece of "pipe" welded to it that the alt bolts too useing about a three and a half inch long bolt. The pipe isnt a pipe but thats what it kind of looks like, it sticks out the left hand side of the mounting bracket and its threaded.

The alt then bolts to this "pipe" part of the bracket. The top then lines up perfect for the brace that I made with two parts I got from OEM Tractor.

So my question is...did the old mounting bracket already have that one inch piece of "pipe" already there or was it added when the alt was added to line things up? Now, why wouldnt Gators work the same way where he could turn it back right side up? Its really simple.

Im no expert like Hugh but I tend to agree that it needs to be flipped and mounted to the thicker part.

I'll look at my 140 again to see how it was done but it aint here right now. One of them still has the generator on there so I'll have to compare.

Thanks for the advice Hugh. Actually I was thinking the same thing. It probably needs to be beefed up. Since you agree, I will work on an additional lower brace.

Guy at the generator shop said he cuts the 2" wide shoe mount down with a hacksaw, which I didn't think was a good idea. Guy at the alternator supply store in Houston suggesting just flipping it upside down, which I liked better. There is a threaded hole in the tractor casting (5/8"?) below the alternator/generator front mount that I could also use to rig an additional brace.

Nawlens: Actually that 5/8" threaded hole makes the 140 an easy fix. If I had mine scanned I send it to you, however I will describe what I did. I went a store specializing in bolts, bought one of those 2" long hex nuts 3/4" size. I cut it to 1-1/2" long, ran a 5/8" drill through it so 5/8 bolt would fit through it. I then welded a 3/16" plate on one of the flat sides of nut. Put the 5/8" bolt through it and threaded this on front side of that unused 5/8" threaded hole in block. My plate on flat side of nut extended to flush with back side of that hole in block. I then put another piece of 3/16" plate with a 5/8" hole on the bolt, letting it extend up past the plate. Those two are welded at right angles. Then I welded a tab at front end of plate, drilled holes throught the two upright tabs for alternator mounting bolt. That made the two upright tabs about 1/2" wider than the alternator base, thus I had to use several washers, but the washers also allow you to align the belt. By using one of those double pullies off an 80s V8 GM, and using outer pulley V this allows you to set alternator back about 1/2". That 1/2" allows the original 140 top belt adjustment arm to come straight to top of alternator, plus allows one to tuck alternator in closer to engine block.

I did much the same on my SA and 130, however they don't have that unused 5/8" threaded hole, thus I just welded a 3/16" plate on top of old generator mount, welded tabs on that for base mount of alternator. I do have a close up photo of my SA alternator scanned, and on all three, position of the alternator is much the same. If you wish send me an e mail and I'll send back that photo.

I will also tell you my SA having the Delco alternator has a 6 volt internal regulator and is still a fully functional 6 volt system. My 130 and 140 are both 12 volt. SA was done in 93-94 complete with new 6 volt battery. It has been completely trouble free, and I only changed that battery one year ago. 130 was done 12 volt about 2 years later and is on it's 3rd battery, 2nd alternator. 140 was done 3 years ago and to date works fine.

Nice tractor. Yes, I love star washers also. By the way their are different grades of star washers just like lock washers and nuts and bolts. Dave

Didn't realize I would post all 5 pics.

The first 2 show the alternator mounted upside down and the lower small mounting shoe (5/8") attached to the front of the front generator bracket on the tractor. Pulleys lined up perfect. Had to make a bracket to attach the top larger alternator shoe (2")to the tightening bar of the tractor. Used a 5/16" top bolt with 30 1/4" washers to take up the slack.

The 3rd pic show hydraulic fluid leaking from under the touch control box and I was going to show it as a separate topic. I tightened the bolts. Anyone know if I need to change a gasket or something?

On the bottom/front of the touch control there are two pistons and usualy the fluid leaks from there, least thats where mine leaked. You will need to remove the whole unit from the tractor. Undo the hydraulic lines from the unit but you can leave them on the tractor if you want. I took mine off and replaced the two O rings at the pump.

I had my "tractor guy" fix the unit after I took it off the tractor. He ordered a kit and replaced the O rings inside the unit. A new gasket came with the kit to reconnect the two hydraulic lines. Youll have to drain the fluid.

That unit is pretty heavy and slippery so you may want some help. You can lift it off by yourself tho. Just dont drop it on your toe, that would hurt.

Nice job on the alt.

I like your style.I have one suggestion if that top adjustment bracket comes loose.Use what I will call inside star lock washers instead of the regular lock washers.I also use these under almost all electrical terminals. This use prevents the terminal from changing the angle and makes a very positive connection. It also makes it easy to take the nut off in the future.Do not laugh at this if you have not tried it.The above lines are meant for all of us.CENTAUR
