Please see the thread below, "Clutch Not Disengaging."

The owner is getting advised to remove the starter and spray brake fluid on the clutch through the opening.

While I know this is a common procedure on 8Ns and other tractors where the most frequent cause of clutch failure is leaking transmission seals, this would be the wrong thing to do on a tractor like the Farmall C where there are clutch inspection ports.

If the M has a lubricated throw-out bearing like the C, he needs someone who is familiar with Ms to tell him how to check the throw-out bearing before he starts taking the starter off...

I just got done coming back in from changing rearend and transmission oil, I seen that there was a greese zerk that someone had removed on the right side of the houseing, it looks to be a shaft of a sort, so im gonna put a zerk in and greese it up and see what happens!

Yep there should be one there. Some times figureing out these old tractors can be a try this try that game unless you just plain open them up and buy new parts and that hurts the back pocket real bad.

I wasn't going to enter my dog in this fight, but Old said to spray BRAKE CLEANING FLUID in to clean oil off the clutch, he did not say BRAKE FLUID. Just clarifying for the misunderstanding of what is being speayed. CARQUEST has good brake cleaning fluid and it does take oil and grease off of parts quickly!

Thanks Mike I didn't catch that he said brake fluid instead of what I said brake cleaning spray. My self I keep 3 types of spray on hand all the time. Carb cleaner, brake cleaner and elecitic cleaner. All 3 come in handy when working on these old tractors

To me theres only one and only one place brake fluid should be used and thats in a brake/Clutch master cylinder. NEVER any place else.

Just a small suggestion Old, brake cleaner is excellent at shining tires up and making them look like new. We used to use it at car shows once we were parked, shine up the tires and have it ready to show. Just take a cloth and wet it with brake fluid and wipe the tires down. Brake cleaner will not harm rubber as many brake components are rubber, cylinder seals, hoses etc.. It does a real good job. The only warning I have is to keep it away from painted surfaces as it will take paint off

An old street rod friend once told me that you could soak an old clunker in brake fluid overnight and paint would not be damaged but walk by a show car with a sealed can in your pocket and it would strip a fender.

ANY thing with a clutch the clutch can and will stick from time to time. What I told him is common to do for any clutch problem doesn't matter if its a ford truck or a tractor. Pulling the starter is simple and and easy way to have a look inside of them. BTDT on fords, farmalls, olivers MH, Case, CARS and trucks as I said BTDT shoot my 1965 ford truck has a problem with the clutch sticking on it and one of both of those thing work on it also

Old: I wasn't trying to disrespect you or discount your advice. But why would you pull the starter if you have clutch inspection ports that can be opened in seconds?

I don't have an M to go look at. So I'm hoping those who KNOW the answer will read this post and let us know.

Even if it has or doesn't have them I pull the starter because you can see more there then almost any place else to maybe see what might be going on. To me its just stardard proceder and since theres only 2 or 3 botls its easy and quick to do. You can also see if theres a mouse next in there etc with the starter off. I didn't know if it had the posts or not, but I could have walked out to look but didn't. To cold right now to go look at things. But if you have as many tractors as I do you learn fast what is easy and what is hard. I have 30 plus of them and most where dead when I got them and now most are running good.

And we have a reply in reply to A. Bohemian, 03-18-2007 09:32:00
geogecky says below there are no inspection ports on an M. So I guess the starter will have to come off after all.
