Guys need some advice. I just bought a 504 diesel out of the fence row. tractor is complete, Rad. is still holding water and crankcase has good oil. Tractor is straight. The reason the tractor was parking according to the orginal owner is the steering wheel boltster was broken at the top right at the connection of the shaft to the steering wheel itself. My question is, this this bolster hard to come by and is a the tractor worth fixing or just part it out? The SN # is D-5858 which shows it is a 63 model

Yours is apparently a Farmall(row crop) tractor according to your description. The Utility doesn't have a steering shaft, they are hydrostatic, and the parts are easily found as they are probably the same as several models. The parts will not fit the mentioned 300/330/340/350 tractors though. The Farmall without power steering does have the gearbox and unfortunately 4 u-joints. Put an ad here on Y/T or do a search for tractor salvage yards. There was a seller on eBay a while back that was parting a 504. The serial number indicates yours is a 62, if a Farmall. Good luck!!

TDK: You get the right guy doing the modification and they will work on 300, 330, etc. You take a look around the archives. Problem is I don't know the title but do remember the discussion.

Hugh, I agree, if you get the right guy doing the modification you could make the steering work from even another brand tractor. I was doubtful this was his intention, aas he only needs a bolster. I don't think it would be too difficult to make the hydrostatic work on the 300 - 350 tractors, but didn't want to confuse the guy into believing the parts from those tractors were "bolt on" replacements which they're not. Although I have been tempted to try it on a 300-350, it seems the cyl and drag links would be way too low to the ground. I may try to find this in the archives, sounds interesting.

TDK: I will admit added confusion was one thing this thread didn't need. From the beginning he didn't say whether Farmall or Utility, he was calling it a 63 which would make it a Utility, yet to me it sounded as though he describing a Farmall.

You wont find that discussion in my name, I was not involved but do remember reading and it must be 3 to 5 years ago, either 03 or 04 I'm thinking. I don't think the archives are all there anymore either. One year ago I was up to 30,000 posts in discussion, all boards, I checked the other day and now I'm only around 26,000. Doesn't bother me a whole lot, as I have no idea what is missing. I can see Kim deleteing some of this OT and social stuff, all it does is clog the system and has no value.

Hugh, it was his description of the steering shaft that made me think it was a Farmall. Then again he could be refering to the shaft coming thru the instrument panel for steering wheel, which I can't imagine it getting broken. If it's the latter then I'm all wrong here. I have been searching the archives with no luck. Had not realized any were missing though. I'll keep trying.

TDK: Having owned a Farmall 504 in the past, I was convinced it was a Farmall he was describing, then he came up with serial number 5858 being a 63 and that indicated Utility.

On the matter of some material missing from archives, I went looking for something I once said, couldn't find it. That was about a month ago. Then I brought up my total posting history since 1999, and found somewhere in the order of 26,000. One year ago, I knew that was very close to 30,000, thus I expected to find somewhere in the order of 34,000 to 35,000 posts. If you look at my history of posting it has been right around 5,000 per year. I had expected I was down a bit in 2006, I'm not quite as keen on this as I once was. I do however suspect there are close to 9,000 posts I made on YT, are missing from the archives.

I've never really raised this before, guess I didn't see it as being very significant. I've never asked anyone else if they noticed the same. When one thinks of the physical working of these forums, I would think it would be total threads missing rather than individual posts. My point is, how do you delete a post without deleteing posts that responded to it. Quite frankly, I don't think I'll loose a lot of sleep over it. I sometimes wonder why Kim archives any of the discussion. Take letter series Farmalls for example, I'll bet every question is in there 100 times minmum.

jg: Is this a Farmall or a Utility, and the reason I ask is serial number 5858, would have to be a Utility to be a 63 model. I doubt if your going to find this part readily available for a Utility. It is close enough to 300, 330, 350, 340 and 460, that steering box hungry owners have long since used them up, and modified as necessary.

If it is a Farmall, I expect you will find the part quite easily. There isn't exactly a zillion of them around either, nothing like the old letter series. Around 17,000 Farmalls and about 21,000 Utilities is all that was ever built. I agree a good percentage of them are probably in boneyards, as most were gassers, and those C-153 have got to be all but toast.

Hugh
Your correct. I loaned my cousin my Data book and called him to look-up the SN #. He has just started getting interested in old iron and he mis-read the Data Book. I got one of my RED POWER mags that listed 504 numbers. The Diesel is a 1962 Build between Aug and Sept. My other 504 is also a 62 built April-May. Got the diesel washed today the only other thing missing is the fan blade old girl don't look bad BUT she is stuck, the wife says I've got to many and this one has to go. I guess she is right restoring a 50 M, she bought me, and SMTA plus a 50 H waiting in the wings.
Thanks for the feed back everyone

I'm probably just wierd, Some guys just look at them as money. Can I sell it for more together or by parting it out? Personally, I get a kick out of seeing an old machine come back to life. I believe the 504 was a unsleeved C-153 engine.

Some have to be put to rest so others can live on. I don't part out tractors myself. This 504 diesel is to nice to part out anyway, just the original owner like a lot of folks just park them outside and walk away thinking someday they will redo the tractor but just never get around to it. I will try to find a g o o d home for this one (or hide it from my wife) second thought that may be dangerous I might get parted-out. JG

I have a 504, and it is a good tractor. Should be fairly easy to find the part, as there should be a zillion of these in boneyards, and that part is not high-demand. I'd try to find the part somewhere, and before I bought it, I'd see if I could get the tractor running, and see how the engine, transmission, TA (does it have one?) and hydraulics are before deciding.
