I have read about a new gas cap that you can get from IH. The question is do I need a new one or is the one I have OK. It is the short flat cap not the tall one. Please tell me if I have the updated one. This tractor is for our 4H club to be restored. It was donated to us by a local farmer for the club. After the tractor is restored it will be raffled off and the money donated to a local charity by the 4H members. Last year the club restored a 1948 fergie. They had a great time working on it and learned some new things about tractors. This year it is a 1948 Farmall H. So you will be hearing from us alot,I'm sure for advice on the restoration of this one. Thanks for now.
Ron

Here is the link to the form to request a cap online. The program ends at the end of May.

The old low flat caps did not allow proper venting of the tank such that vapors could build up and when you opened the cap, with a hot muffler nearby, or someone smoking, there were supposedly some fires or the potential for a fire. Additionally, as mentioned, they tended to allow gas to splash out and leak all over the tank outside. Consequently the new taller cap was triple baffled for proper venting w/o the splashing. IH (Navistar) had a free replacement offer as part of the recal but i believe it expired this or last month. The new cap can be purchased by your Case-IH dealer i think.

The main problem with the old flat one is that it allows gasoline to splash out into the top of the tank, dripping down on the battery & starter. Not good!

yeah tell me about it, the old H i got from my grandpa needed a new sediment bulb assembly because the old one leaked and the generator was wired wrong so when you hooked up the battery, it sparked. fixed that problem right away. some people. Just my 2 cents DF
