timing marks 464 gas

I put the points in & gapped according to his book but I know the timing is off. It knocks sharply under even light loads and starts a bit hard. It also gets hot easy and sounds like it's laboring all the time. His operator's manual tells what the timing settings should be and recommends using a timing light BUT!!!!! No place does it tell WHERE to find the timing marks!

I didn't see any ports around the flywheel housing, no notches or pointers on or around the front pulley. I admit I did not crawl underneath it, there was wet snow on the ground.

I figured someone here might point me in the right direction to find the timing marks so can help this feller out.

"Laboring" is a sign of LATE timing as well as is overheating.

"Spark knock" is a sign of EARLY timing.

Since you are seeing BOTH I wonder if the spark plug wires could be arranged in the wrong firing order?

I'm thinking part of the knocking may be the real nasty smelly old eye burner stuff that "USED to be gasoline" still in the tank.

The tanks were within an inch of empty but what's there is REALLY bad. I put 5 gallons of fresh in it. Cracked open the lines & with a bit of air pressure in the tank got fuel through the carb before I ever tried to start it. Worked over the ignition system to get it working all but timing. Choke only worked to about half closed. Fixed that but still it wouldn't start. I had to squirt some pure fresh gas in a plug hole in the manifold to get it to start the first time. It's been outdoors, no tarp not run for at least 4 years according to the owner.

I thought more of the fuel condition & went back the next day, loosened the sediment bowl & set a 5 gallon bucket under it to catch whatever would run out of it. Haven't been back yet.

If it was my tractor, I'd just buy a shop manual but that's not the case so I really appreciate your help. The owner is no longer allowed to drive his truck and wants to at least drive the tractor. Had to retire early bcause of the MS and now has a very limited income. Non resident brothers all own the land now days.

He's promised he'll make room for it in the barn from now on if I can make it start and run reliably. I told him that's all the payment I need! I think the tractor has it in it, it just needs TLC.
