I'm working on a 1939 H and the PTO pops out of gear. The slot the shaft engages into istorn up so it looks like a ramp on either side of it causing it to pop out under a load. Can someone e-mail me a breakdown of the transmission so I can see what I need to do.Is the shaft it couples to the main shaft or counter shaft and where can I get one. This could probably be welded and the slot recut.I'm sure this is somewhat common of a problemI imagine I need to split this thing apart to fix it right.Any advise is greatly appreciated,Brenden

The first thing you need to decide is whether it is important to keep the tractor as original or update it to a better fuctioning style PTO.

Yours is the orininal style "dog clutch", small output shaft, no extension housing PTO. The latest style had a splined engagement clutch, larger and longer shaft with an extended rear housing. The swinging drawbar is also about 6 inches longer. There was also a second style that had either the splined clutch or the larger shaft, I dont recall which change they made first.

If you want to keep it original you will need to have the parts rebuilt. To do a good job will require removing the transmission counter shaft along with the PTO.

The whole job can be done without splitting the tractor but if you have the right equipment it can be easier to split it. Much less working from underneather the clutch housing. The counter shaft will come out with the gears installed on it but you have to remove both the front and rear bearings from it.

My dad had a 1940 model and he would weld up the PTO end of the dog clutch about once a year. It always kept lasting less time on each repair. He finaly put in a new counter shaft in the transmission and used the PTO out of the 1943 he had with a loader.

If you just click on the e-mail instead of add reply it will send me and e-mail. It won't let you see my e-mail address. When I reply to your e-mail then we both have the addresses. I just saw this post. For some reason my computer is not wanting to save the pdf files from the cd. I will keep working on it. It may be tomorrow before I get them off to you. I have your e-mail address from above so it should be a problem. Randy

There is a good exploded view of transmission in Case IH online parts catalog. You will not have to split tractor. You can get to some of transmission parts through belt pulley housing, will probaly have to remove transmissin/frame cover to get countershaft out.
