I have been in the process of rebuilding the hydraulics on the Super A and pulled the hydraulic pump off the tractor. I found that the nut and washer holding the drive gear in place to be loose. The gear is still in good shape, but the washer is chewed up and the nut is worn a little from rubbing against the casting of the engine.
The washer is a flat washer that appears to be bent up on one side as if to lock the nut in place. Does anyone know if that is the intent of the washer? What is suppose to keep the nut tight?

Just finished rebuilding mine today. Had a bit of a hard time bending the washer up. sounds like the last person to rebuild yours didn't get it bent up far enough to lock the nut in place.

Marvin, As Gene says the washer gets bent against the nut after you have tightend the nut. The washer should have a tab that fits in the key slot. Once the nut is tightened you bend one side of the washer onto the flat side on the nut. That way it shouldnt loosen up.

The washer is bent against the nut to keep it from coming loose.
