mounting fenders on an H

I would like to mount fenders on my "53 Super H. Problem is, the holes in the tops of the axles are all rusted out on the inside - threads are bad. Any reason why I couldn"t just run a tap down the hole and re-thread them, larger obviously? How about Heli-coils?

Any ideas greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I ran the proper sized tap in the axles on my H and was successful in restoring the holes. It took a fair amount of time, sweat, and oil - but it worked.

Oversize bolts should work fine if you can't save it in the standard size...

9 times out of 10 there is some cosmoline in the holes and you can tap them out.

I would use the heli-coils. I had one installed in a large rotary mower cylinder head. Threads in
aluminum don't hold up very well. We used keenserts on aluminum in at work. Hal
