What type magneto would be correct for a 1934 McCormick Deering W-12? It has a F-4 on it now, but I was told that maybe it shoube have a E-4 being that year. Serial #WS512. Any comments appreciated.

As JJ stated, the correct mag is an F4 with the E4A automatic impulse coupling. W-12 parts manual says that WS 503 through WS 1592 used this combination. Incidentally, an F4 with the usual F4 impulse coupling won"t work; the E4A auto impulse is about half an inch longer than the F4 version. Bolt holes on mag won"t line up with bracket if you have the wrong coupling.

The F-4 mag on it is most likely right because i believe they started using those in 1934. My F-12 is a 34, and it has an F-4 mag, but the weights and springs on the mag are the style that were on the E-4. So it may be a mix between the two, with the F-4 body, cap, etc. and the E-4 windings and weights like mine.

Would not want to bet my neck on it but I am pretty sure it should have an F-4.
