I recently bought a Farmall 544 and have noticed noise in the hydraulic pump. The tractor has 2400 hours and seems fairly tight, but it sounds like the pump is getting air. This is more so right after starting, and also if the front end is higher than the rear. It is up to the full mark with new Hy-tran and has a new filter from Case IH. Any ideas why it would be getting air?

Hugh is right. My 666 started doing that last year and to keep from tearing it apart I put 5 gallons extra oil in it and it works fine now. There are o ring in rear end that go bad and let the pump suck air over filling will keep suction pipe submerged and stop air from being pulled in.

George: My 656 did this from the day it was new. I always ran it about 1/2" over full, even after it was rebuilt at roughly 10,000 hours. My tractor had the 17 gpm pump, and I think the extra volume created a funnel suction similar to a sink when water gets low.

Hugh mine worked fine to 6600 hrs, then the shaft in the little pump broke, after replacing that it started sucking air. I guess we damaged a o ring when we had it apart. Mine has the 17 gal pump and a 9 gal piggy back to work lift. It is basicly just like the 656.

Trent: I had this same problem with my 656, 40 years ago. I started running it 1/2" over the full mark and that ended the problem. It went 15,000 hours that way. I've run across other folks who used the same cure, it works.
