I just put in new rings and did a valve job on the engine.I also replaced the points cond. & coil in the magneto, valves & points were set at .013.heres where the problems start. I choke it it wont start. I prime the carb with gas or starting fluid it wont start. If I pull the plugs and prime the cyls. with gas or starting fluid it wont start. If I pull the plugs and squirt them with starting fluid it starts every time. Ive tried a defferent magneto and plugs and carb. the results are the same.Im absolutely stumped. Thanks Roger

Does it keep running after the ether start? If so; then weak crank spark. Did you check the impulse to see if it 'snaps' at TDC? If no impulse the crank spark will be very weak but will fire the ether and then the spark gets better with RPM and it keeps running.

Sounds to me like youre just flooding it the heck out of it. Let it "dry" out for a while, then using NO choke or priming of any kind, give it try and see what happens. mine is EXTREMELY sensative to too much fuel. This is mine: Spark Advance set half way, throttle just under half way, pull up twice - if it doesnt start then push the choke in for one pull, then no choke(BTW, you do know the choke is pushing the rod in, instaed ofthe usual pull out?)Usually it starts by then, most times I dont even have to choke it.

I think you need to do as Jim suggested. Check that coil for a hot blue spark. Pull the coil wire from the cap after you have the engine running. You may want to use a pair of insulated pliers so you don't get bitten. You should have a hot blue fire from that mag. You may have a weak coil. Those plug wires should be copper wire and the coil wire too. How does the compression feel when hand cranking? You may need to run the the engine so the new rings seat.

A magneto that is putting out less than perfect spark will fire ether but not gasoline. I would look to the Mag. I made a rule to never fix more than one thing at a time on anything. Just so I can be sure what I "broke" is identifiable. JimN
