Hey Hugh, Farmallhal and I went tractor huntin today and I cam home with this prize. What can you tell me about 460 utilities? numbers made, etc. Its a gas, 6,000 hrs, doesn't run, hydralics don't work, other than that, its a gem. You really gotta get down this way, Hal knows all the best eatin places.

Gary: You and Hal off junk huntin, I'll bet you good wives did not take part in that caper. By the way your spelling junk (junque), are you sure you didn't drive by here, but then I'm not even sure the French spell it that way.

So, what kind of super eating establishment did Hal introduce you to today?

If you look at serial number on left of page 460 Utility started at 501 and started 63 at 11898. I doubt if there were very many made in 60, total number is probably under 12,000. I've never been a big fan of Utility type tractors. A good narrow front row crop is just as manuverable and will work on much softer soil. Make note,I said softer soil not wetter soil.

Gary: Junk with class being called Junque, I'll remember that for future reference, sounds reasonable.

Hal apparently hasn't told you my complete recomendation for a larger mower tractor. when he first discussed it with me, he pointed out that he and Dee were both mowing with two smaller tractor mower combitations. I suggested 766, 886, 856 or Deere 4040 or 4040 with power shift and sound guard cab. I pointed out to him that with Deere power shift and sound guard cab with air, Dee would be up before sunrise to get the tractor seat ahead of him. He informed me, he would not be able to live the Deere down amoung friends and relatives. Now, you wouldn't be one of those friends by chance, would you?

I first read this about an hour ago, been thinking since, Kim should start a food page. Then you, Hal and your good better halves could travel North America, reporting back to YTer's all the good places to eat. Since Hal would then be away a lot, he could buy the Deere, I'd go down and mow his grass. You wouldn't be there to poke fun and the critism of his relatives would run off me like water off a duck.

Hugh, I had told Hal an 886 with cab and air, would keep Dee much more comfortable while she was mowing. Now I must be careful what I say because she has promised me some pork chops next time I am up that way. Hal tells me she fixes some killer pork chops.

Jimmy, You must rate pretty high on Dee's list as she won't cook those pork chops for just anyone. She always keeps reminding me I've got to get Jim up this way again so she can serve you up a few. You'll know what you've been missing after the first couple of bites. Like the dozen operator we had here last fall, Dee cooked a nice warm lunch meal everday while he was working here. One of his helpers came by and said to stop feeding him as he had other places to go. Food must have been fairly good as he gave me a free day of work with his dozer - I guess for another lunch. Have you heard anything from Paul recently as he hasn't jumped into these recent posts Gary has started and I know he likes to have fun with Hugh's legs. Take care, Hal

Hal: Correction, I think Paul would poke fun at any of my short comings, however as we used to say in Nova Scotia, "it's a short road that doesn't have any turns." We haven't heard a lot from Paul since he bound the chain up on two chain saws. A dozen or more folks gave him almost as many causes, some of them complex and others quite simple. As I see it, must have been one of those simple fixes, whereby he should have known better. I bet this will get a rise out of him.

Personally I tend to think he is in such physically good shape that it takes 4 chain saws to keep him going, one working with the other three at various stages of cool down. hahahaha, oh my gosh tears are runing down my cheeks.

Hi Huge. Sorry I've been missing all the fun. I got both of those chain saws going including one of those small saws on an extendable pole. I have put too many hours to count on them this last week. We got some rain Friday night so my son and I took the opportunity to burn what we had cut up. Didn't want to catch the whole place on fire. Like in CA. We burned about 16 trailer loads on Sat. I find I like burning better than cutting. I have place's that hurt that I forgot I had. After all of this I can sure see where a small tractor with a loader whould have a lot of use's.

Hi Paul, Really nice to see you jump into one of these threads Gary Mozark has had going concerning some of our recent activities. Not seeing you getting aboard I and Hugh were beginning to think you had something else going on. Know what you mean about the ice storm clean-up as it seems I was dealt a years worth of work which I didn't have in my schedule. Still cleaning up and burning and even got my pants on fire the other day and thought I wasn't going to get them out. They were flannel lined ones and that fire just would keep coming back. Finally poured my drinking water on the pant leg and that handled it. Now for Dee to hem them up a little and going to look rather short but will not get down in the hot stuff again.
Take care and seeing your name on the forum again, Hal.

Hugh, I had forgotten about his chain saw problems until you brought it back to light. He might still be cleaning up his place with this very nice weather we are currently having. Must be at least 70 F this afternoon. I worked out all day until about 30 minutes ago. Cleaning up the ice storm tree damage and Paul had a lot more then we did from his pictures I just have a much larger area to contend with. He's probably a good 20 years younger then we are so he might have needed all those chain saws to keep going. I have a few chain saws but I just migrate towards the lighter smaller ones as the day goes along. This thread might be too far back for him to chime in by now. Take care and hope you are sharing in this beautiful weather, Hal.

Jimmy: The way Hal and Gary have been travelling around these past few weeks, you'd think they were writing a book on where to eat in MO. Now, I am not exactly sure they are being straight forward with me on who the big eater is.

Also if I can get him to buy the Deere 4040 with power shift, sound guard cab with air, you will not be getting that pork chop, plus Hal will have to find someone like Gary to dine with everyday. Dee will fall in love with the Deere, thus Hal will be just dear.

Hugh, I'm just out trying to find some good places you might want to check out when and if you ever down to see the Missouri guys. Looks like the group is building as we find and check out these eating places. Dee's John Deere brother's birthday is later this week but he's going with us for one of those Farmall Rib Eyes up around where Gary hangs out. He'll probably be green if he eats the whole thing though. Paul is sure staying quiet on these posts and guess I'm going to have to check up on him. By the way, we have a 1966 Massey Fergurson 165 dad bought around 1970 which has those spin-out wheels. Never changed them so still where they were when the tractor was delivered to the farm. Take care, Hal.

Hi Hugh, Yep yesterday was quite a day. First Gary comes by with an address which doesn't exist, no name or phone number. Just the tractor model and price. Off we go into the wild blue yonder looking for the non-existant place which has these tractor gems. We get near a road which was called Pigeon road (we were looking for Prichard something) and he's going about 80 mph, slams on the brakes, does a sliding 90 degree left turn into Pigeon Road and calmly states this is it. Gary says "I'm a retired cop" and we get so we can smell where are going. Low and behold down this dirt road we go to another dirt road which goes off into the "real brush" and low and behold we come out into this junk yard paradise which would have made the movie set for "Deliverence" think you were in classy Palm Springs. I think Gary is quite happy with his new purchase but is going to have to get it going in order to get it loaded to haul home. I guess we can get the bucket off and get it on a trailer if it would be easier to work on it at home. I have a feeling we will be back down off Pigeon Road next week sometime.
The 886 is some tractor and almost overwhelmed me in size to my letter series Farmalls. Those front tires look like main landing gear tires on the early Boeing passenger jets not to mention the rear ones. Boy does that German 6 cylinder engine sound smooth and the rain cap after warming up just remained stationary at idle. I heard about another 886 in the area which belongs to a neighbor's father-in-law which is for sale as well and need to take a look at that one as well. Gary must have liked that pulled pork sandwich as he had to get another one to take home. Dee and I share one but usually take another home for lunch or so in a day or two. The place is about 30 miles away from here and we usually only stop there when in that area. With Gary and Sharon around we might be doing it a little more often it seems. Hal

Hal: Sounds like an exciting guy to travel with. Also sounds a bit like a former neighbor I had. It had been a terrible dry summer, it was raining all around us, sonetimes coming within a mile. I had driven through rain, thus knew about it. My neighbor who never left home that week, claimed he smelled the rain.

One other thing, all 766 and some of the first 886 had the 360 American IH engine. I've operated both, the 360 has a lot more torque. Where I lived in Nova Scotia, IH dealer sold about 15 766 and 4 886 with 360 to 50 cow dairy farmers for forage harvester work. Those 4 sold about 25 more 886, except the later 25 had the 358 engine. It was the last straw for his business. There is no CaseIH dealer there today, hasn't been since mid 90s. Deere came on there in the early 80s and never looked back, he'd take those 886 on trade, and 24 hours later they were in upstate NY. By the time he was done the IH dealer didn't even have a parts business left.

Mike, from the pictures of your recently purchased H, I think you and Gary both have your work cut out for you. I think Gary is just trying to keep the old overalls on his tractor instead of a new tuxedo like you plan. It's amazing how Gary can see through the value of what he purchased but he feels he obtained a real gem. I'm certainly sure he will have a real working tractor when he gets it running and working right. His inspiration will be those two horses who want their hay delivered to them. Hope things are still coming along with your project and keep us posted as to progress or problems, Hal.

Chris: Here's betting those power adjust wheels will hit the scrap pile. Between 1957 and about 1961 all companies were plagued with those power adjusted wheels, they tried flogging them everywhere. The wheels died almost as quick as they appeared. I never had a set, quite frankly figured they were a nightmare unless you bought the tractor to look at. I expect they were all being manufactured by one outside supplier. Just one of those poorer ideas that didn't fly, and rightly so.
