560 Diesel Hard to start

Hello guys! I have a 560 diesel that will not start with the starter even after warming the glow plugs for 3-4 minutes. We can pull start it and it will run good for a while. Eventually it will try to die out. If I reduce the throttle and then try to give it full throttle it will sometimes just go ahead and die. Father-in-law says the injector pump is sticking and it is very tricky to remove and repair ourselves. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

Make sure the return line to the fuel tank is not restricted. We never had any problems with this on our 560, so don't know for sure if it would cause a problem. On other Diesels, a restriction will result in a no-run situation. Sounds like it's a fuel delivery problem, though. Don't overlook the fuel tank outlet in case there is foreign material preventing full flow from the tank.

Brownie: No question, restrictions together with cracks, especially on suction lines should be his first check. It is the very inexpensive fix, and one should always look there first. A new or rebuilt pump and injectors will not work either if those things are wrong.

Rex: You don't mention condition of fuel filters, when were they last changed? It could be dirt or cracked fuel lines. Sometimes lines can crack don't leak but will allow the system to suck air.

Forget the diesel fuel conditioner, just a waste of money.

I expect from your description the pump and maybe injectors need attention. This is a job for professionals with specialized equipment. Anything else you are just kidding yourself. You can remove all those items, make sure you line up timing marks before you remove pump. By all means, take pump and injectors to a professional. It will probably spoil the better part of $1,000.

Do you have clean fuel? Are the fuel filters clean? Have you drained any water off? Are you using a fuel addative.
