Was searching on youtube and came across what looks like an all-
electric Farmall 100. Has a single point hitch, canopy and has solved the offset center of gravity problem! Neat TV story! Guy is getting up hay, too, with his all-solar Farmall.

Hugh, think you have enough sunny days up your way to make this worthwhile?

actually, it is a cub, and form reading elsewhere, the box on the front right side is full of batteries that it charges form the solar panels.

Don't be to impressed with the video. The tractor was featured in MotherEarth News a while back. The tractor's gasoline engine, which is still in the tractor, is running during the clip. Also the radiator, exhaust, and fuel tank are still in this solar powered tractor.

Listen for the engine during the start up and through out the clip.

Can you say B.S.? There are some solar powered tractors - this isn't one of them.

I agree 100% - that video is pretty much bunk.

Notice the "work" the tractor is performing - pulling a rake slowly thru light hay on a hard, level field - about the lightest work any tractor will ever see.

Let's look at it from an engineering perspective: To achieve the Farmall 100's rated 18 PTO horsepower (per Nebraska tractor test #537) I calculate it would require solar cell array costing around $175,000 at current prices. And the solar array would occupy roughly 1,700 square feet.

Further the tractor would develop full power only around noon on a cloudless day.

Bottom line a solar tractor MIGHT perhaps become competitive when gas exceeds something like $100/gallon. Until then it's just a mildly interesting "fluff" story on the evening news.

Indeed Scotty - not likely the operator would need sunscreen!

Thank you, Bill in NC.

If you search for electric tractor on-line, you get quite a bunch of information.
