My grandpa had an auction in the mid 60s. He sold an F-20 he had bought new. His son found the tractor years later and got it back in the family. Unfortunately he died of cancer about 3 yrs ago. I talked to my Aunt after a funeral today. (120 miles south)She said that all he had been trying to do was to get it running good again. The engine has been removed from the tractor and it sounded as if all someone (me?)would need to do is reassemble it. I have done some of my own engine work on my vehicles. Head gaskets on three engines and replace a piston in one of them. But this isn't for me and I really don't want to screw it up. Where can I get the right literature to go with this job so that I can see if I want to try to do this for her.

SDE, your story sounds really familiar. I got started in tractors around 8 years ago when I inherited my grandfather's 1936 F-20. It was a total basket case, and would be easier to list what I kept then list what I replaced. Anyway, I did a full restoration, engine and all, without having any background in tractors. I also find it easier than most automobiles. The parts are heavier, but they are also bigger, and more simple. the F-20 is a wonderful beast to get started on. I found an IHC rebuild manual for the Regular. About 80% to 90% will apply directly to the F-20. So, I have been exactly where you are. If you need help, email me. I know the easy way to get some stuff done, with photos also.

SDE you will find that those old tractors are easier to work on than most automoble's. And the since of accomplishment will be fantastic. As was mentioned a IT manual will give most info needed on your project. They are available here on this site or at your local TSC store. I think around 30 bucks. Good luck, and let us know how it is going. We have all three of my grandpa's tractors and they really help keep memories alive.

I have an I&T manual for my 400. I was hoping for a more detailed manual. They have in it that dissembly is "self evident". I find that to be lacking in info sometimes. A co-worker may have a manual for his granfathers F-12 and I will see what that manual may have for info.

My brother was going to teach me to drive this tractor when I was about 8. Grandpa had a bum leg from a case of blood poisoning after he cut it with an axe while chopping wood as a young man. He welded a pipe to the clutch pedal and used a smaller pipe in it as a hand clutch. As I remember it my brother said to hit the brake, so I did. The sudden stop cause him to lose the hand clutch lever. POPPING the clutch caused me to lose the right brake pedal and the tractor did a left 90 degree turn. We were parking it in the garage at the time. The 64 chev took a hit in the front door. We don"t know how two old people got down to the garage so fast. That was about so wild as I ever saw Gramma. My brother hide in the barn.
