Hi,
I've been working on the band brakes on my 1940 Farmall H. The bands got soaked with oil due to leaks around the seals. I've had the bands relined, and replaced one of the drums that was grooved where the seal runs. The tractor had 2 seals on each side, yet the parts manual shows just one. Is it a common improvisation to install two seals?

As the others have stated, the original seals are considerably thicker than the new ones. The problem with putting two seals in there is that the outer one will not get lubricated and will wear prematurely. Packing grease between them will extend the wear of the outer one. Unless there is a groove in the shaft, only one seal is necessary to do the job.

What I have found is the old seals are over twice as thick and if you look inside the old seal there is actually two seals together seperated by a piece of rubber.

I like to put two seals back in but I only do that if there isnt any groove cut into the shaft. If theres a groove then you can use one and avoid that groove usually.

A piece of pvc pipe the same size as the shaft comes in handy sometimes. I put my seals on where they are "face to face" and the second one is hard to get on without putting it on the pvc pipe first and then sliding it onto the shaft.

i have seen it done quite a bit, and have dne a few myself, if the shaft has a groove wore in it and you cant get a speedy sleeveon it, it may work. the new seals are usually thicker than the origionals, so you can stack two. pack grease between both seals.

I suspect this was done trying to allow for the wear you spoke of. If you have it fixed I would think one seal will work. I believe some of the older seals were thicker than they are nowadays.

Thanks for the suggestions, folks. I looked into the speedi-sleeves and am going to try to get one to fit my drum that I am re-using, as it has some light groove. The replacement drum I got that I am using on the other side is quite good. If I can get a speedi-sleeve, I'll just use one seal.

We have a 1940 and a 1941 H that we use in public programs at the farm where I work. I pull a #8 Little Genius plow as a contrast to the horse-drawn walking plow that we do most of our plowing with.

Hi Again Folks,
I just got the brakes back together again with a speedi-sleeve. Test drive went well. Thanks again for the suggestion.
