Farmall M bolster question

Ok, got the bolster out and I'm starting to clean it up. I noticed on the upper bolster, where the bushing is, there is a lot of wear. It's slightly rough and about as deep as the thickness of a pop can, maybe deeper. I have new bushings to put in but I'm wondering if I should just smooth the worn area with some 600-800 grit sandpaper and go with it, have it machined and try to slip it in with some shim material to fill the space or can it be spray(?) welded and machined to the right size? Anyone of you guys had to deal with this?

Currently restoring a 1945M and also replaced both bushings for the upper bolster asssembly. My shaft was also worn down about 0.020 causing play in the shaft assembly. I had a local machine shop spray weld both bushing areas on the shaft which took care of the play. Spray welding process cost about $50.00 for the two bushing areas. Now I just need to get a good set of top sector gears to finish removing all the play from the steering.

Here's my experience: I found bushing area on my Super H steering bolster shaft somewhat worn (but at least worn smooth) when I took it apart to replace worn bushings. Using trial and error I tried different shim thicknesses between the OD of the new bushing shell and it's bore until I found a thickness that eliminated radial play at the top of the shaft without binding.

The tractor now steers easily with no wobble.

Presuming the shaft is not worn too badly, polishing and then shimming should work on yours too.
