GOODAFTERNOON
I know this is off topic by I think you all would
be the best guys to ask.
My fencer isnt charging my electric fence.
I checked all around the fence for possible grounds and it is ok .
The fencer is new from Agway and it was working ok till now.
Could wet ground or frozen soil cause a bad ground.
I cant even get the tester to light off the terminal on the fencer.
T hanks for your input. Harry

On most fencers you can hear it clicking if it is working correctly and most of the bigger ones have a status light showing everything is cool on the fence. If you disconnect the fence wire and the ground , and then test across the terminals and get no response from your tester. Your fencer is not putting out anything. Or your tester is bad, not usually the problem. As others have said you may have blown an internal fuse or lightning may have smoked the board. I have also had an instance where water got inside the unit from a driving rain storm . It shorted out internally and several components fried.. I have very sandy soil and it gets really dry. I have 3 eight foot copper ground rods driven in 7 and 1/2 feet and then bonded together with 4 gauge solid copper ground wire... When it gets really dry the cows still don't get hit.. and it is a 12 jewel unit. Then it is time to drag out the hose and soak the soil around the ground rods.. Good luck Tallperson

The wetter the soil, the better the ground. Not sure about when it's frozen, but that's the purpose for sinking the rods deep. You probably have a lot more property than I do, but I have several pieces fenced off with electric tape from 1 to 5 acres (3 strands). When the ground is moist to wet, a solar charger with the 12" spike that comes with them is enough. I've never used a house current charger, but when I have doubts about my DC ones, I disconnect the ground from the fence and touch the ground of the tester directly on the post.

Good Luck

Some fencers will have two fuses in the plug for the electic outlit, others will have them in a fuse holder in the front of the fencer, check them first a fuse may look good and be bad.

I would think that if you aren't getting something off the terminal lug on the charger, then you may have blown an internal fuse. Had that problem several times and it was almost always a fuse. Repair guy said if lighting hits miles away on a fence it can get your charger if all the fences are grounded together.

Take a leak on the ground rod and see if that makes a difference.

We used to try to get our city cousins to take a tinkle on the wire. I think we got a taker or two. In my younger days I always used to grab onto the wire to test it, or take a piece of grass and hold that to it and get a tingle.

Thanks,
Ill check with the fence unhooked from the fencer
I will have to get a ladder to reach that high.
I have a 6 foot s/s rod in about 3 1/2 to 4 ft but it didnt seem to help what do you all use to clamp the ground wire to the rod. Thanks

I use the split-type ground wire clamps. Home improvement stores carry them.

In a pinch I've used small stainless steel automotive hose clamps, but I consider that a temporary solution. (Good enough if you're just troubleshooting.)

Generally it's a grounding problem. I try to get a ground rod in at least 3 feet. Some would recommend 6 feet but that generally isn't practical. I then make sure the ground rod is good and clean where I clamp the ground lead on.

If it's not a ground problem then it sounds like the fencer is bad.

If the charger does not light the tester with the fence disconnetced then I would think it was bad.

IH 2444. Did you see my post the other day. Am I right that you have a 2444 that belonged to Cecil?
