Used my 52 H to push some snow around this weekend. It started and ran like a champ several times. After sitting for some 45 minutes, I fired it to put it away. It ran for about thirty seconds, then started puffing black smoke, developed a harsh popping sound as though it were running on one cylinder and is virtually non-responsive to the throttle. I've cleaned and dried the distributor cap, cleaned up the contacts, cleaned the rotor, cleaned the points .. nothing seems to help. I'm a novice and unless you folks see something esy and obvious, I'll hand it over to those who make their livliehood from problems like mine. Thanks very much in advance for any and all ideas.

Gentlemen, I am indebted to you for taking the time to offer your thoughts on the problem with my H. I think Hugh has probably nailed it .. especially his second comment that his tractor began labouring just before it started belching smoke and noise. That's exactly what my machine did. Now, I have only to decide whether to haul my tractor to Windsor, Nova Scotia or see if the company will let their guy come to my home. Again, my most sincere thanks for the time and advice from all of you.

Del that is fairly easy to fix if it is the distibuter gear. Get you a IT shop manual and it will walk you through installing the distributer and timing it. Jump right in if your going to keep that thing you should try working on it yourself. It is not that hard and will save you a lot of money. It will also give you a great sense of accomplishment. Good Luck

George: I've had an e mail with Del, trying to convince him, I can walk him through this. He used to be a behind the scenes TV newsman when I lived in NS. He's a Canadian boy off the prarrie, went east and married a salt water girl, and now he can't or won't leave Peggy's Cove.

I told him all he needed for tools were 7/16" to 9/16" end wrenches and sockets plus a couple of blade screw drivers. I suggested when he goes to CaseIH for parts, get them to change the gear on end of distributor shaft. Now, all he needs is persausion from folks on YT. I know he can do it, he's only one generation off the farm, that being himself. Besides he's retired, she is still working, thus he may as well be tractor wrenching. We might even talk him into a collection of Farmalls.

I've even told him where he could get a good feed of southern smoked ribs, with the money he saves, and from a guy who got his smoked ribs schooling in Tn, Ky and Mo. Now you tell me, what better deal could he get. I hope he fixes the tractor before he takes on the feed of ribs. Problem is the ribs place is about 30 miles away and very close to the CaseIH dealer.

Del, I am not sure what it is but I tend to agree with Rusty and Hugh it is a quick check. I would look at that distributer drive.

Del, Hugh is telling you like it is. It is the distributor. Carburetor icing will cause the same symptoms, but icing rarely occurs after the engine has been running for awhile.

Del: Another thing I noticed, just before my tractor started belching black smoke, poping and backfiring, the tractor started to labor as though timing was was off. I expect it had operated for a spell having slipped a few teeth on the distributor drive.

Del: Remove the distributor cap with No. 1 cylinder TDC on compression, make note of direction rotor is pointing. If not pointing to No.1 plug wire you very likely have stripped distributor drive gears.

My Farmall 130 did this two months back, my first reaction was iceing in carb. I added methyl hydrate to gas tank, however no cure. At first my tractor would start but it did get worse and finally wouldn't start. My tractor had started great that morning around 0 degrees F, and when the problem hit it was as quick as you could snap your finger. You guessed it, stripped distributor drive gears, and they are the same on all 4 cylinder gas Farmalls 1939 to 1958.

I will warn you the matching gears from CaseIH are roughly $165. CAD. You can probably find a complete distributor with drive for half that amount.

Black smoke say its running way to rich. Float is most likely stuck or bad. Tap on the side of the carb to see if it clears up or you might need to check the float to see if it now has a pin hole in it.

You may have sucked some snow into the air cleaner which melted and then froze.

Re: What happened? I recalled icing in archives in reply to Del Archer, 03-04-2007 17:25:29
Link

Del, I recalled reading a while back about a problem someone had this winter w/icing of the carburetor. I when to the archives [link is provided near center of discussion board under the red "Farmall...."banner] and used the search function and typed in "icing carburetor". You can read the posts from the link above and maybe do some more searching. I really find this feature offers some great info/entertainment also if a person isn"t always able to check the board daily along w/the ability to recall everything-as this author can"t even remember what I had for dinner some days. Hope this helps [HTH] and that you enjoyed your tractor seat time [TST].

Sounds to me like your carb is icing up. Try pouring hot water on the carb, it should smooth right out.

I should add that I also cleaned the plugs and checked the gap .. all seemed fine. I guess what has me puzzled is the suddeness of the malfunction. One moment running smootly, then belching smoke, harsh popping, and non-responsive throttle.Again, my thanks for any suggestions you may have.
