I have an engine block that has been welded on the side. They did a nice job and with a little grinding I can get the shape right. How do you guys finsh or paint the cast iron to make it look like cast iron and not a smooth spot. Hopefully one of you will have a trick!! Thanks

Get a spray can of auto undercoating. Mask off any area that you don't want sprayed. Shake it up "real" good and spray lightly at a distance of about 18 to 24 inches to kind of splatter it on. Let dry and prime and paint. I did it to cover up some grinding areas and it worked great. Good luck.

I had a similar situation on my engine block and I found some "cast texture" stuff at Home Depot in a rattle can. I can't recall the name, maybe machinery finish? I think it was a Rustoleum product and it really worked well. It actually was in a different finish color that I covered with a coat of IH red after the texture stuff dried. BTW, it is not ceiling or wall texture. I blended it in with the rest of the block and I was very pleased with the result.

I"ve sprayed on several coats of primer letting it dry just enough to put on the next coat without running then when I have a good thickness and it"s still soft but not wet I use a pad of 36 grit sandpaper and press it into the primer to give it texture. It takes a little experimenting but it hides the smooth spot pretty good.

I have textered plastic injection mold cavities with a very heavy sandblast, but you would need more than what you could produce with a home shop sandblaster.
