You guys need to help me out of the woods on this terminology.

What is a SMTA

What is a Stage One M?

What is a Stage two M?

As distinguished from an M and super M?

Here is my version some of the Super M changes actually came on last Ms disk brakes, 12 inch clutch, front timing cover that would take live pump to name some. Stage I super M added several engine changes, bigger carburetors, different gear ratios as well as several stronger transmission and differental parts, LP gas option and bigger radiator. Stage II added live hydraulics but I believe belly pump could still be special ordered, 3 bolt starter and battery under seat. Stage III or SMTA added TA, live PTO, new longer clutch housing and longer hood however either live PTO and/or TA could be deleted. Have left out many minor and maybe some major changes.

Tom, Here Goes..... .....Start with a regular run of the mill Farmall M ..... add the larger engine , and disc brakes = SM-Stage I, then add Live Hydrolics = SM-Stage II, Then add SC seat assembly, & TA & LPTO = Stage III--AKA-- The entire SMTA series. The SMs culminate in the StageIV or AKA as the 400 The pennicle of the series , with all the refinments. Being the 400 was in the letter series it had no "stage" designation. This is a basic description of the entire SM series taken from Chapter 9, Page 103 of Guy Fays Letter series book. Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

Well, whatever it is and maybe I will get it figured out...It looks to me like it ought be setting im my shop...about 3 tractors back in line for rework...and I am absolutely certain, my wife is going to have a fit. She now complains that "all you do is rebuild them, park them over in the corner and start on another...isn't one enough?" Well, she is partially right, there are 2 G allis chalmers, 1 H Farmall, 1 Regular 85% complete, 1 Farmall Cub 100%, 1 H in progress, and a B John Deere... Well, I do go down the line once per month and start them up...I guess the bright side for her is the Estate Auction. The Auctioneer should have a good time with them! :-) And It keeps me from chasing women...(something like a dog chasing a car).

Stage one the same as Regular M (belly pump) but with the 264 engine. A Stage II has live hydo pump added on to that. A stage III is a Super MTA. and a Stage IV is a 400. /There are other changes along the way but thats the basic idea around the stages.

Stage 1 is a Super M with more power than a M and faster gearing. Stage 2 has live hydraulics and the battery under the seat. SMTA is a stage 2 with torque amplifier added. I think the SMTA has live PTO also.

Hey...why not REALLY confuse him and tell him that the SMTA might not have either the TA or the live power. I hear it's true.

You arecorrect all options could be deleted, effectively making a SM out of a SMTA, It was still called a SM, it just had no TA wing on the front hood badges. (and no TA or Live Power Take Off. JimN

You are correct, I tried to simplify it to one in which both options were deleted, but the possible mutations got to me. JimN
