Service Manual question

I'm going to (finally) order books from Binder Books for my '46 H. (Operators Manual, Parts manual, and...?) Before I do I have a couple of questions.

I'm going to tune up my tractor, rather than a complete overhaul of the engine. So...

1) What is the difference between the Service Manual and the Serviceman's Guide? Should I just get one of them?

2) Do I need the Clutch adjustment manual? There is also a Clutch service manual, but that's expensive. Do the service manuals not cover the clutch?

3) Do I need a Magneto Service manual? I want to buy a proper H4 Mag, but I'm going to get a rebuilt one. Do the service manuals not cover the Mag?

In your position i would get the I&T manual as it will tell you anything you need to know gives all the capicities and settings and will be GOOD print and not a copy that is hard to read as i have some other copies that arent that great printing

Mike, I really agree with CNKS's posts below but have seen your posts on your tractor in the past and it seems like cost is a concern in it's redo. I didn't want to add another manual to your purchase requirements in my earlier post but the I&T shop manual would be a great supplement. You will want the one labeled "IH-8" which covers all the letter series Farmalls. It will not go into the specific detail of an IH service manual for a specific model but is a great overall supplement. It sort of starts at the point which expects some skill and knowledge from the person doing the work. I purchased mine new for about $20 or slightly more at a farm and home store. You will find both to be very handy and from your photos you have a lot to do to get to where you have indicated you want to end up. I have a couple of Blue Ribbon Service Manuals and find them very detailed with what they cover. Good luck and keep the photos and questions coming, Hal.

Mike, when I ordered all of my manuals from the same source when I asked about the Serviceman's Guide I was told the Service Manual contained everything that was in the Servicemans Guide plus numerous other things. No, you won't be needing both; the service manual if for the complete tractor. I also heard it explained it was something for the initial service on a new tractor before it's first delivery or something like the pre-delivery service requirements. As a point of reference, the Serviceman's Guide is only 24 pages while the Service Manual is well over a 100 pages. My Service Manual is not in the house so I can't answer the other two questions at this time. The clutch adjustment is for 1 1/8" of free travel on the pedal for a H. You just adjust the clutch pedal rod which runs along the clutch housing on the outside to the noted free travel. Don't know anything about the mags as all my Farmalls have coils. Hope this helps, Hal.

Hi Mike, The owners or operators manual will have your clutch adjustment procedure in it.

When i think of the servicemans guide, I think of the blue ribbon manual series. These manuals are specific on one particular part of the tractor. Example, when I rebuilt the hydraulic touch control on my Super A I bought that particular guide for a parts breakdown and part numbers.

The service manual covers the entire tractor!

Im sure others will have more to add to all of this.

I have never seen a serviceman's guide, but I think it is an abbreviation of the service manual, and does not have detailed procedures in it. The Blue Ribbon manuals give detailed overhaul instructions of specific components, more so than the service manual goes into. I am somewhat dissapointed in the H Service Manual, in that it usually does not give in depth procedures of all components--In the case of the H, the I&T manual is a good supplement.

Farm Store, or type I&T manual in Google, it will give the publishers web site and other sources -- mine is in the shop or I would list the web address.
