My H has the "half moon" steering worm gear. I know that the round ones can be turned to take up some of the wear. Has anyone ever turned one of the "half moon" type over (upside down), or is that possible,or would it make any difference? Or could one place a shim under the gear? I was trying to image what kind of puller should be used and if anyone knew of a homemade idea for this.

Hi, You can not turn the gear over because the spline it sets on is tapered, make sure the trust bearing and bushings on the upper bolster shaft are good, also the ball bearing and bushings on the steering shaft. Use a jack under the frame rails to check for vertical play on the bolster, use shim washers under the gear if you can. If this doesn't give you a good fit then look for another gear. Good luck, Chuck
