I notice that H and M tractors in old pictures often have much shorter mufflers than you see today. Would the board please comment?

Just wanted to add the mufflers of today that it doesn't take no time for them to rust. The tractors you see in photos have nice clean looking mufflers. How can I keep it looking new?

The "old style" mufflers (short body, small outlet pipe) are being manufactured again. We carry these to fit the H, M, A-B-C-100-130 and 560.

That's good and bad. Good if you want absolute originality for tractors before the late 40's? (our 47 H had one). Bad if you want the exhaust in your face all the time. The long pipe simply looks better to me, and on the correct muffler, sounds better.

I had to replace the muffler on my SM with a shorter on and cut down the stack to get it into the shed. I also had to redesign the cross support arm for my Farmhand loader so that it would get in the door. I have to duck my head pretty good going under the door header.. THe exhaust tone is a bit more pronounced, but I wear ear plugs all the time anyway so no big deal.. Tallperson

Right on guy, that,s what Im doing with my W-6, too ,
I saw a couple of M,s and an H in a pull on the RFD channel with open pipe,s, and they sounded really sweet , all revved up and really talking good!

According to my book the muffler was 'optional' equipment. Standard was a straight pipe. There were two mufflers available, a short one and a tall one. Also available was a spark arrestor between the manifold and the exhaust pipe. I suppose that to some degree the muffler acted as a spark arrestor. My A has the spark arrestor on the exhaust diverter and a 10" straight pipe with the rain flapper, the IA has a 6" pipe on the exhaust diverter with an 18" muffler, 6" outlet pipe and rain flapper. I don't think the muffler on the IA is original, (its a glass pack inside). BTW the A snarls pretty good.

I think the older mufflers had a better sound to them. Many years ago our 1947 M wouldn't go in the shed with the muffler on the tractor so we dug a hole just inside the shed. The front tires went in the hole at the right time to clear the door entrance.

The responses are correct, taller stack opening was, however, a very good thing for keeping the exhaust out of the operators face. One compormize leads to another. JimN

I knew of a Guy who, when they bought thier Brand New H (Don't know the Year) they couldn't fit it in the shed becouse the Muffler was to tall. His dad was going to cut the muffler down with a hack saw, but he decieded to jack up the shed instead!!! I Almost had to cut my Super M's Muffler down but luckly the stack did fit on my Barn -David

The early Hs and Ms had shorter pipe on top of muffler and that gave them a entirely different sound than the later tractors. Sound would probaly fall about half way betweem straight pipe and the later tall mufflers. Remember hearing a lot of comments on that way back then.

The original mufflers were short, and a lot of folks cut the pipe down even more to get in small garages and sheds.

Right. And, to get under tree limbs when turning at the end of rows or passes in fields. Used to be lots of trees around and even in fields in the mid-west as I recall.
