The gasket where the axle housing bolts to the tractor on my 42 H leaks and need replacing. I have been told that you can pull the PTO shaft to remive the bolt holding the big bull gear to the axle thus avoid removing the top deck. Has anyone out there had any experience with this?

Yep that method will work I had to change those gaskets on my Grandpa's 48 H. I belive it took me around 10 hrs to do both sides. Their realy is not any trick involved in it that I can remember.

My method takes a lot of work and time. It took me a whole Christmas vacation to get mine done. I did what you described. Jack up the whole rear end and pull the PTO. Hold a big wrench on the bolt on the bull gear and spin the wheel. That should give you enough leverage to break it loose. Then use a cart or cherry picker to pull the wheel and the housing right off. Good luck.

Ed,

Have you put a wrench to those housing bolts yet? They will work loose and ya might not even need the gasket.

purists won't like it, but if this is a work tractor, and not a show tractor you may be able to back the bolts out and slip it back enough to clean the surface and put some gasket maker in there.

Another solution is to jack the Diferential just so there is no pressure on the axle housing, then remove all the bolts and (as you describe move it out a bit and clean all the gasket out. split a new gasket at the top and loop it into place with #2 permatex skimmed onto the gasket on both sides, and a little extra where they come together at the cut.
