Hi all , Nothing but wind and rain here as of now ( 3:55pm ) . Question - Will a M need a set or two of front wheel weights with a 2-14 or 3-14 bottom plow ? I know , lots of variables , so how about worst case ? Just wonderin' . Thanks ! ...Randy

A farmall M will not need front wheel weights to pull either of those two plowes..... the M should pull 3-14s in second and third gear ....no front end lifting.....

George in KY email me if you get a chance. I just went and looked at my SMTA and I dont think I can flip my mounts like that. I will send you a pic of my tractor.
AND
Are you pulling from the swinging drawbar or the hoop?

Not to get on subject ;) but I have a SMTA that I pull and I made my own weight racks for it. I took H beam cutoffs from the local steel yard and cut them on the band saw (It takes a BIG bandsaw) at 8.25" if I remember correctly. That is sized perfect for Magnum or older IH weights (dont know about newer, will fit our agriking weights too) After I cut them I drilled holes to match the holes in the frame and milled an IH symbol in the end. (That is optional) Bolt them on and weight her up!
One tip that I could give you is to not get too long an H beam. The weights will walk out to the ends if you dont secure them and it will twist the beam.
Also, no precip in SE Wisconsin just REALLY windy.

Randy I use Ms daily and I cant think of anything that would really require front weights. I tug pull one of my Ms and the first year a boy was spanking me at every pull on a 60 JD, his front end would come up about 10 or 12 inches off the ground and he would win by inches. My M would not come up at all. After some head scratching I changed the pitch on my drawbar and it was a different story, the front came off the ground about 10 inches and I finally won beating that old 60. ha ha . I have a home made 3 point hitch on my other M to feed hay rolls in the winter as it is easier to start than the diesels and it sets on the ground better than my 7610 ford will and it has 500 lbs on front of it.

If you use a boom pole they are very handy. I can easily lift the front off the ground before I overload the three point and boom with a load. I don't usually go far with a load on the boom pole, usally no more than fifty feet. Mostly its lifting something off of a trailer and setting it down. But sometimes it needs a little weight for steering. I lucked out and got two sets of front weights for $120. I plan on leaving one set on permanently and the second for just in case I need a little extra.

Hi George , Thanks ! That's good because I don't want to spend the money on a set . MAN are they getting pricey ! Twice the price as for a rear set or more . So which direction did you move the drawbar ? I'm not a puller so my first guess is up . Second guess is that if the fronts lift , the weight transfer to the rear goes up too . Carry the drag chain a little higher and it pulls down better on the rear of the tractor . I'd like to do some farmer pulls sometime . But the farmers I know around here ( not many ) are dead set against using a working tractor at a match . I don't understand their reasoning ( They say - " why pull the guts out of your tractor " ? ) What is field work for 10-12 hours a day compared to 30 seconds in front of a sled ? And the load applied on the track is steady compared to the varied conditions in a field . Like I say , just don't understand their reasoning . Anyway , Take care ! ...Randy

I was just looking at the radar - Are you getting clobbered with bad weather ? If not it looks like you are going to get it soon . Again Take Care and watch the weather !

At the tug pulls I attend there is a 18 inch limit on drawbar hieght. The axle clamps that drawbar bolts to has two hieghts on it, I had it on the tall end which had my draw bar running about level at 18 inches. I turned the bracket over and mounted it that way, but then my drawbar hieght was a little more than 16 inches, so I loosened the support brackets on lower end an the drawbar bolts from upright brackets attached to tractor this lets the drawbar pivot on bracket. Then remove bolts from support raise drawbar up and put bolt back in one of the other holes and raised it back to 18 inches. This put a angle to the drawbar thus changing the pull on tractor. There are 2 or 3 holes in the corner of drawbar for adjusting drawbar hieght. It has been my experiance that tug pulling will not hurt your tractor. These old girls are very tough. You do however need a really good clutch and rear seal in your tractor or that sled will slip it. It is raining a flood here has been most of the day.

Randy in the day of the M back in the 40s and 50s no one used front wieghts with a pull type plow.

Blowing snow here now. They just closed 80 between Ia City and Des Moines. I'm 49 and I don't ever remember it closed for weather.

Gary

Hi Gary , Snowing hard here now ( 4:45pm ) but the wind has slowed to almost nothing . Thanks for the info . I'm thinking of getting a 3-14 JD 555H unless I find a good IH on rubber but I haven't found one close enough yet . There's the spring consignment auction soon so there might be some to choose from there . I don't know the weekend yet but it should be late March . It's like an old time auction but they take in all kinds of farm equipment . Take care ! ...Randy

Hi Old , I made it though the electric-less times ! I camp so much it was like camping inside ! Even better with the genny keeping the house warm . I'm getting a wood burner back in here though ! 18 years with only a wood burner in the basement with no power outages , I get rid of it and go all electric and the electric goes out ! I got to re-think this all electric routine HA-HA .

About that Oly . I'll take it if you deliver it to North St. Louis county ( Florissant to be exact ) and only if it will fit in a pickup . HA-HA . If by some chance you are heading up to that area my brother lives there and could bring it up on his next trip up or keep it at his house till I can come down . Otherwise I got to pass , you just live to far away for my finances and time available . What is the model of it ? Can't tell much from the picture . Weeeellll You Take care ! ...Randy

I know what you mean about being to far. Shoot its been 10 plus years since I made a trip up that way and now days with my bad back I don't drive more then around 100 miles one way and thats even hard on my back. I do get up to Columbia MO a few times a year but thats to go to the V.A. hospital. Yes it would fit in a pick up truck bed. No I don't know the model number on it but maybe I could find out. From what I have been told the Oliver plows where the best one because they pulled easy and did a good job to boot.

Mennenga's spring consignment auction is Saturday April 7. It's my favorite auction to go to all year. Lot's of good stuff, usually fairly cheap too!
