How do I 'Test' my H?

This one is for Gordo. Because he's right, I do need to get this '46 H of mine tested out and fixed up in good running shape before I tear it apart. So, here are things I know I need to do for a tune up..
- Replace the gas
- Replace the oil - Replace the spark plugs
- Replace the coolant
- Replace the tranny fluid?
- Get the battery secured

Once done, I need to drive it to figure out how the tranny and motor are working. But I've read that I want to put it under a load to really see how the motor will perform. But I live in the suburbs. There are farms close... should I ask if I could pull something around a field in order to put it under a load? Or maybe I could hook up my SUV and pull it around the neighborhood? :)

If the system on the tarctor is 6 volt....why would you put an 8 volt battery in it?? The generator is setup to charge 6 volt, that's what your kick-out is for or in conjunction with the 6 volt regulator. In order for it to charge properly or at all under a load after starting keep the battery 6 volt.

To answer a few of the questions... Yes I have started it. It has a converted 12 volt system with a key. It would cut out after 5 minutes of running, and the Carb was suggested to be the problem. I have some instructions on how to clean that up. Also we found the solenoid wasn't grounding properly, so I have a new one waiting to go on.

The hills idea sounds like the best. I didn't realize a hill would put that much strain on it, so I'll give that a shot.

Gordo, when you said I should clean the sludge out of the pan... this sounds silly, but where does the sludge go? Do you just collect it in a container and take it to a recycle drop off? I ask because I can't hose off grease and oil in my front lawn. So I have to have a plan in place for proper cleaning and disposal.

Mike, I don't really understand all your questions on this forum and the tool forum.

It has been mentioned several times you are in the Navy. Back in the '60s, every base that I was stationed at (except Nam) had an automotive hobby shop with tools and knowledgedable hobbiest working on their projects. Forget buying air compressors, where to clean your tractor, types of jacking equipment, and on and on. It's all there. Some of the shops had limited space so the vehicles had to leave with the owner when the shop closed at night. Others had enough space so large projects could be on going if the serviceman was working on his project.

You can soak up a lot of oil with sawdust. It'll make a great fire-starter in the back yard and your kids can roast marshmallows < grin >

I know some parts stores (Schucks?) will take used oil (may be a fee, don't know). Put the sludge in a milk jug, top it off with oil, and "dispose of it properly".

I like the hill idea. I like to lay on the brakes good and hard to load the tractor. You will really start to hear it scream esp in 4th and 5th.

Forget pulling something, it is simply not necessary. Find an empty road, put it in 5th and run it a couple of miles. See how it handles hills. But, the best way to check the engine is to run a compression test -- that will tell you if you need rings, valves, etc. Compare your readings with those on www.weberstractorworks.com.

Whatever you pull, do it right, rig it so the tractor don't climb up and flip over on you. Don't attach anything high up on tractor. Lower point of attachment the better. Pull in reverse if possible.

Yes, pull the suv with your wife standing on the suv brakes, or - better yet - flooring it in reverse. If the tractor wins, sell the suv and use the dough to fix the tractor. If the suv wins, sell the tractor and go on vacation in the suv. Either way, the neighbors will love the show and probably elect you president of the homeowners association. (Just kidding. HAW-HAW!)

My friend was sent home from a tavern to try to out pull his Uncles Chev 4 wheel drive with his Dads 330 utility. His Mom and Dad stayed at the Bar. First they played in the dirt and the truck lost. So they moved to the blacktop road. Lee let his Uncle start the pull and then he drug him backward with the tires on the truck spinning. Probably the easiest $50 Lee's Dad made that year.

Drop the pan before you replace the oil and filter. Clean all the sludge out of it. Drop the oil pick up unit and clean it also. Remeber where the 4 long bolts came out of the pan. Reinstall with new gasket. Check to see you have the copper washer on the pan drain plug. Wouldn't hurt to pull the valve cover and slosh some diesel fuel all around there, and then high pressure air clean. Or better if you have one the spray gun that has a large nozzle, can for cleaner, that hooks up to your compressor. While your spraying that ga ahead and hit the big chunks og grease anywhere else on the tractor. Makes them easier to get off whatever method you use later. Pull starting is an option if you want to hear it run before you tackle the starting system. Like others said, stay away from 8 volt, but go to elec supply house and get a 1/0 cable made up to go from battery to starter. Flat copper braided cable for ground is good. Perfectly clean connections, brush, sand polish! Check terminals at switch for clean also. If any wires get warm when you are cranking something is loose. What manuals do yuou own? We're not going to do ALL your research for you .

I thought...for some reason...you are in the USN. Take it out to the Naval Base and dock one of those larger vessels with it! :-)

I was wondering if you have ever started it up? Change the oil and put some fresh gass in it and see if it will fire up...when you are messing with the battery...remember it is positive ground--and to spin it over good, I would put an 8 volt battery in it. You are going to be able to tell a lot by just hearing it run.

DO NOT put an 8 Volt battery in the tractor. Those things create more problems than they solve.

An old H will start just fine on a 6 Volt battery if:
1. You use good 0 gauge cables.
2. The connections are clean, shiny, and tight.
3. The starter is in good condition.
4. The battery is in good condition.

I got the DO NOT loud and clear but, I am wondering why not? I am getting awful good service with them on my H and get a good clean and quick start every time with the coil and distributor. May be different with Magneto. If the 6 v battery gets a little weak one has enough to turn it over but not enough juice to make coil work satisfactory!

Pulling the SUV will not load the H. If the H does not have a remolt or three point hitch it may be difficult to find a farm with equipment you can pull. A good solution might be to get a pull type bush hog (shredder)and do some bush hogging. You might also get paid. If you do, be sure to cover the radiator with a screen to protect from air clogging. Even so, you may have to clear the trash from the radiator on a regular basis. (Bush hogging may still be light work.) Pulling a harrow or a plow is the best load test. The harrow should be about 6 to 7-feet wide.

Yep go ahead and pull that suv. Have someone tap the brakes on the suv in all gears to see if the transmission pops out of gear.
