I'm looking to buy a floor jack for my H. Since I don't have it here with me I can't measure the distance. Plus I have odd wheels on it right now, so I'd like to know the distance with the normal Farmall wheels.

Is a 19" max hieght enough? Or should I spend more money and get a 31" max?

A 19 inch floor jack for an H is virtually useless. All you need is a bottle jack and some blocks. But, support your tractor with jack stands, or very sturdy, non-wobbling blocks of wood, use the jack only to raise it. Along with your post on Tool Talk, you are trying to buy too much all at once. Wait until you get your tractor home, then decide what you want. This may sound strange, but once you start working on it you will know what you need, your tractor will actually tell you (not verbally, but you WILL find out). Don't buy a bunch of useless stuff, such as that 3 HP air compressor, or a cheap angle grinder. The only thing you really need an air compressor for is painting. Air tools are nice, but they are not essential.

Mike Now your talking, a floor jack has many uses. You will be half way to splitting the H. With the floor jack and portable cherry picker from Harbor Freight or Costco, you can split it. Jack under transmission cherry picker on the engine. Be sure to block wheel fore and aft(rear). After all fasteners are removed move cherry picker ahead (two man job). Reassemble in reverse order. We have done six I.H./Farmalls this way including an H.

You don't need a lot of jack to raise the rear end. An inexpensive 5 ton bottle jack will do the job. Get some blocks from rr ties, and 4x6 posts, some 2x8 scraps. Build a platform for the jack under one axle, slip it in there. You should only have to extend the jack 6 inces or so. Then block that side and lower onto blocks. Do whatever you need to do o that side, then go to the other. Or if you want block up both axles. Make sure the front is well blocked, and that you are on a very level slab. Again you are getting ahead of yourself, Talking about buying things, jacks etc, when you don't have the engine, cooling, tranny ,clutch, or anything else done yet. COncentrate on first getting the engine running smoothly. This will keep you busy for awhile and eat up lots of your non-existent cash.

You always get right to the point, don't you? lol

I like it. The reason I asked is because I found a cheap jack, and knew I would need one. But yes, I do have lots of tune up work to do first. That was a suggestion to me some time ago was that if I could get the tractor in good running shape BEFORE I tear it apart for paint, then I wouldn't need to overhaul it, and I would just need to paint it (and replace several parts).

You will need the 31 inch one. Reason isn't for sure on the rear end but in the long run you will find the 31 works better for other projects also. And even then it will not be tall enough to jack up the front end
