Farmall H Alternator

I have a 1952 Farmall H tractor that has been converted to a 12 Volt system. A previous owner cut a hole in the side of the hood to accomodate the alternator, and allow for closure of the hood. I have a new hood and would like to replace the alternator with one that will fit under the hood. The current alternator does not appear to fit, even at the end of the bracket. Does anyone have any ideas as to an alternator that would fit? Thanks!

Joshua, I converted my 1951 H a few years ago with the help of several folks here on the forum using Bob M's wiring diagrams. No hood modifications or idler pulleys are required and alternator mounts in same location as the generator on the original bracket. I'm a very "picky" kind of person with appearance and would be more then happy to share everything you need to do using the Hitachi 14231 alternator which fits almost like it was made for the H. I documented the entire conversion and have it in a note I can forward to you if you like. Just send an email as mine is open through the forum - just click on "send an email" attached to this response. Hope this helps, Hal.

Thanks to all for the help! I appreciate you experts looking out for us newcomers! Looks like I've got something to do this weekend until my new clutch kit and flywheel get here.

here is a side view. the idler makes it very easy to keep the belt tightened correctly.

Joshua - Nicely done!

Note: If you'd like to get that pair of alternator aux. terminals away from the hood side sheetmetal, it's easy to do without removing the alternator:

Simply remove the 3 long screws holding the alternator halves together, then pull the rear frame and stator winding back a bit, rotate it 120 deg then screw the halves back together. (You may need to reset the brushes when you reassemble - it's simple to do).

For safety pull the ground cable from the battery before you begin!

A Delco will fit. There is a picture of an installation over on the left under Parts and Pieces. Go to the second page, look for Farmall H alternator.

There are a few we have a "Hitichi" 14231 in my fathers Super H. I was told the Mitusbishi A1T23377 will work. However if we were going to do it over I think we would have gone with the 12 generator.
